Hello again, Sumitra. Thank you for your interesting note. It sounds like you are a very busy person, indeed! What do you teach? We live in the foothills of the Cascade range of mountains, near Mount Rainier. Our elevation is 425 m, so our summe...

Hi Irene!
Thanks for the reply!
I didn't get the whole veggie garden planted, but I did top dress the rhubarb and the raspberries. My son got his garden planted (kholrabi, carrots, lettuce and flowers. I went out to plant, but got scared...I think if I plant it's going to snow again!!
But the lady at the nursery told me to not be afraid and to get all the cold weather stuff in. So....I'll do it!
I enjoyed your photos, I've always wanted a green house!

Thank you, Irene, and Ian.
The average last frost here is supposed to be May 15 and the average first frost Oct. 15, but variation is considerable. The tension is all in the spring, for the sake of fruit blossoms. The altitude is 2550 to 2650 (surrounding peaks higher of course). Precipitation was said to be 55-65 inches a year, before global warming was heard of, and hasn’t been openly revised. Creeks going dry that never did would seem to have something to do with unadmitted human influences quite aside from drought.
I have made sourdough bread but not very well. My two problems are (1) reluctance to use a whole electric oven for one loaf of bread, so that I try other ways and get terribly uneven baking; and (2) need a cold-hardy starter (like the ‘49er camps had?) due to night-time temperature dip (wood-stove, small).
About seed-saving, I notice SSE doesn't have that many varieties of cabbage, prob. because it takes a second season to save it. But it is an important vegetable (easy keeper, vitamin C, almost self-pickling), so needs its share of seed diversity.

Irene,

Once again, an email in my box says you've left a comment, but when I click on the link, I see this page (http://my.kitchengardeners.org/profile/IreneBensinger) and it only has the first comment on it. I'm going to copy this to paste now into an email if I get an email screen by clicking on your name. If necessary we can figure this out by direct emails.. Maybe my high-contrast screen colors are hiding something, but I have to go somewhere soon all day. Will try changing colors if necessary tonight.

Tthanks for your patience.

Irene,

I don't find your last comment on the 'wall'. I'll just try to reconstruct my original response, but it might not sound as fresh! I'm in the northeast corner of Tennessee, near both Virginia and North Carolina, in those mountains.(perhaps not higher than your foothills, since western mountains are taller!)

You must be in a first rate community to have so much cooperative seed-saving activity by agreement among yourselves, instead of as part of an already existing organization.

(I see our Favorite Foods are similar--sourdough is the ultimate bread, really)..

Irene, did you already get an answer from me? It disappeared when I came back from looking at the rest of your page, and I didn't think I'd sent it. Will check again tonight.

Hi Irene:
My winter garden isn't quite as hearty as yours! But I'm improving each year. Right now I'm harvesting celery.
Looks like I'm just down the road from you, in Portland!

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
