Where did I hear that?

Recently the New York Times carried a fascinating piece called "Your Brain Lies to You." The authors, a professor of neuroscience and an editor of a neuroscience journal, point out that the brain does not merely gather and stockpile information. Instead, the information is stored, repeatedly recalled, re-encoded with each recall incident, and gradually moves from immediate storage in the hippocampus to long-term storage in the cortex. Along the way it is removed from its source and context, a pr… Continue

My Cretan diet

As a doctor with a strong interest in nutrition, I follow research work done on the Cretan diet with great interest. As a gardener, though, I'm interested in it for quite different reasons: I need to use up a helluva lot of green stuff. It's almost inconceivable to me how much leafy stuff is out there right now. I neaten up the garden and pick a three gallon pail of greens, and the next day things look a little shaggy again, and two or three days later I'm back where I started. Yesterday, out of… Continue

A fertile time

There's a wonderful freshness about my garden right now; it's lush and green and producing like crazy, and the maladies of fierce heat and tall weeds haven't set in yet. Perfect! It's a healthy young child of a garden, and the inevitable adolescence to come is easily forgotten.
For me, this is the Year of the Potato. Potatoes aren't supposed to grow well in our area, because our alkaline soil reduces yields and gives them scab. Since plants can be contrary, potatoes have decided to flourish in m… Continue

through a veil of righteousness

Lately I've been thinking about how people use morality and ethics as tools against other people, and how this applies to gardening and eating. Taking it as a given that we all want to live as morally and ethically as possible, and do the best we can most of the time, how do we manage to irritate each other so frequently about exactly these issues? My own failings in this line were brought home to me rather sharply this spring when a longtime friend asked me what we had eaten for Easter dinner.… Continue

burgeoning and foraging

We're moving into a season of exuberant growth, in which every time I turn around something has changed. The changes are clear in the slad bowl, which is now overflowing nearly every night and has some unusual occupants, like savoy tatsoi, a small wrinkly deep green asian leaf which, when coated with a little vinaigrette, looks like it was carved out of jade. Little foraged "shamrocks" of wood sorrel lend a tart lemony note, spinach and several kinds of lettuce give bulk and sweetness, and every… Continue

There appear to be two heather woods on this site now. I just noticed some of your photos I haven't seen before -- lovely garden. How are you doing? I have spinach that appeared to winter over and grow under the snow. I've never had that happen before. We had 4 inches of snow this week and the storm isn't completely over yet. This is my spring break. I've only managed to spend time outdoors twice. Grading papers too. Ugh.

Heather I noticed you are interested in Beer brewing. My husband brews too, I'm thinking about videoing him doing it. Should we start a beer brewing group?

I think one of ours might be wolf-hybrid too, by looks of her--giant! But she's actually as sweet as can be and plays second fiddle to the little, much more alpha, one. :)

Hi Heather,
Your photos are great! A garden really should have some pets in it; your dogs are adorable! Is one of them a husky? I have two who are currently imagining themselves back on the tundra--it's snowing hard here in Maine.
Cheers,
Annie

Hi Heathger, I've just realised that I haven't got your blog, "Albuquerque Local Food" on my link list onmy blog... Sadly though, your site doesn't support rss feeds so my blog won't automatically update with your latest content.
How's life with you anyway???
All the best.

Hi Heather - good to hear from you,

Sounds like an interesting and progressive project for the Albuquerque city gov to initiate and support. Its fine with me if they wish to post some of my writing on their own website - but, some of it is wirtten for gardeners with considerable experience and may be more appropriate if rewritten with less experienced gardeners in mind. I'll assume they understand their readers and gardening well enough to sort that out.

I don't know about food gardeners in Albu - but the local Master Gardeners should be able to assist you. Both of the numbers below should connect you with Albuquerque MG's.

Albuquerque Garden Center
10120 Lomas Blvd NE (Eubank & Lomas Blvds.)
Telephone: 292-7144

Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service (CES)
1510 Menaul NW (West of 12th St.)
Telephone: 243-1386

The Bernalillo County CES is open year round from 9:00 to 4:30. Please call before visiting when the hotline is not operating to be sure someone will be there that can assist you. CES offices are closed for lunch from 12:00 to 12:30 year round.

If there is any way that I can assist you or the project, please let me know - sounds like a great project to be involved with.

regards,

Darrol

Thanks for the welcome! Some of my parents are interested in better nutrition, but sadly most of my patients' parents are just trying to get by. I'm doing well when I convince them to give their kids water to drink. . .

I like what you said about local in New Mexico. Not many people appreciate what is it like to garden with infrequent rain. Even "Farmer Monty" - Los Poblanos CSA - supliments his offerings with fruits and vegetables from Arizona and the west coast states.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
