Hi Joel I think bay leaves are pretty tough. The meths were no problem at all. It also cleaned off all the black soot and gunk that had formed due to the scale infestation. We did not eat any leaves that had been cleaned, but waited for the new ones…

Has anyone checked out folia? - they have a completely different type of system - I have never heard of any numbers going up to a 14 before. You put in your location and it automatically comes up with your zone.

I had a nasty infestation of scale insects on my small bay tree a few years ago. I only noticed it due to the black mould that began to form on the leaves. The little beggers were hidden away on the stems and the underside of the leaves. The only wa…

This Year I Want To Grow Liquorice.

For a number of years now i have wanted to grow liquorice. I remember chewing the roots as a child. This year i am definately going to get some plants after finding this website.
My mother used to work in a factory making 'Pomfret cakes' in Pontefract when she was a teenager. Pomfret cakes are small black rubbery sweets, which are still made in Pontefract..
It must be a fairly hardy plant to be able… Continue

Permaculture and Aquaculture

Here is a link to a little goldmine of films that i have recently started watching.
I have posted the link elsewhere, but they are so good, i thought they deserved their own blog.
See what you think.
They are about a farmer in Austria called Sepp Holzer, who is a real gardening hero.
These films are interesting, informative and i am sure they will enth… Continue

Winter Pruning Time

This week i have been pruning my fruit trees [apples and pears] on the days that have been cold, bright and sunny. This year i am giving them a light prune to save time. Mainly removing the water sprouts
[strong vertical growths along the length of the branches] which are a result of previous years over zealous work. Also removing crossing branches and tipping back the long growths by about a third.
On the allotment i get canker. I think this is caused by the wet ground. One apple tree growing a… Continue

The Edible Louffa

After looking at the naked seeded pumpkin page i moved to the main page of the "Long Island Seed Project" site and noticed these.
What a great idea. If you get peckish in the bath you can just eat the louffa!!!!

Hi Glen,
Olga passed with lots of rain but not too much damage, I think.
What is the climate like now where you garden?
Our tomatoes are slow to ripen but look okay.
Will you plant tomatoes for your summer?

Hi Glen'
What's happening on your alotment garden.
We are starting to pick tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, eggplant, basil, wild rocket, passionfruit and spring onions.
It is so good to have these fresh veggies again.
Gillian's part of Aus is having really heavy rain, down south it is very dry now, the chillies are doing well!

Hi Glenn, you'll probably want to whitewash your matte black perimeter in the summertime, not to mention the glass if it gets too hot. And rocks and brick release their heat slower than water does - they also absorb heat more slowly. (as far as I know...)
Happy gardening,
Jeff

Yes thats right Ron. I noticed you were from Dayton, Ohio. One of my favourite songs. You look like a baritone yourself.
I noticed your comment on the snow. We've have had more snow here in the last few weeks than we have had for twenty years. Its a bit of a pain driving to work in the morning, as the snow always seems to come each night.
Happy gardening.

Hi Amna
Happy Christmas to you too. We have the same cold and sunny weather here too. We have had a couple of inches of snow earlier in the week, which is still lying due to the freezing temperatures. The weather forcast says that it is going to warm up a little, so the snow will soon disappear. This should allow me to dig some parsnips from the now frozen ground. These will be roasted to acompany our Christmas dinner. A good frost on them really improves the flavour. I don,t know why.
Do you have seed catalogues in Pakistan? Or do you obtain your seed locally. I suppose with having two growing seasons, the purchase of seed is spread out throughout the year.

Hi Penelope
Thankyou very much. I think it's the weather for sitting by the fire and studying the seed catalogues.
Then i go through my tin box filled with with old packets and throw away any that are older than five years.
I also have a week off. Its just a pity we don,t have the Australian weather.
Have a nice Christmas.

Just looked at all your photos. What a magnificent garden! Maybe I'll sit with seed catalogs and make out my spring order today. It's snowing lightly and the wind is blowing. Am glad I have the week off so I can stay indoors.
