Hi Gillian We used to grow Pigeon Peas in Natal (north coast) and cooked them with lots of tomato, onion, chilli = and garlic. They can make your hands really black when you peel them so wear gloves. They are worth it though as they are delicious.…

Gillian, I thought the pigeon pea was a kind of tree thing and people only grew it for nitrogen fix in thier gardens or for animal feed. Can you use them the same way you would a normal legume.

gardening year round in the tropics

My aim was to try and grow and eat as much as I could from my garden year round, not just the drier winter season which is our main growing season. I have been harvesting pawpaw and passionfruit, and then asparagus for the beginning of the wet season, but leaving the shoots now to grow the crowns. Herbs are all doing OK, but do struggle with the huge amount of rain and bugs.

I was wondering what I was doing wrong with my luffas -

The veggie garden fence is a tangle of vines -

the thick snake… Continue

I did it - I ate some sweet potato leaves!

I have been hearing about how tasty sweet potato shoots and leaves are, (not regular potato leaves - they are poisonous) then even saw them for sale at the local saturday market. So armed with my scissors I trimmed back my sweet potato patch, and laid the shoots and leaves gently in the steamer. Wow! how tasty they were - not at all slimy (a lot of what is referred to as spinach-like here can be very slimy) definitely will be having that on the menu a bit more often!
It is very hot and humid at… Continue

Recycling to make a beautiful garden feature

I have always loved chimneas, but in the hot humid tropics any extra form of heat seems superfluous and in fact downright silly.
We do however have mosquitoes, and at this time of the year always have mosquito coils burning....... along with a couple of citronella candles,....... along with personal insect repellent on really bad evenings.
So.. I was eying these palm fronds that just lie around the bases of palm trees and end up in the landfill. I nabbed this one from a friend and voila - a trop… Continue

Honeyeaters

I love these little birds called honeyeaters, and we have plenty of them now - they are attracted to the passonfruit flower and the cats whiskers and the bottlebrush. All of which is flowering at the moment. I know they like to start their nests on hanging things, and I have tied a few bits of string at strategic places, but these have all been ignored. Yesterday after bringing in the washing we discoverd the start of a nest on the end of a piece of underwear! My hubby carefully disentangled it… Continue

Tropical fruits

Oh I do love tropical fruit. I just had half a pawpaw out of my garden filled with passionfruit pulp. The cloying sweetness of the pawpaw is offset by the slightly acidic taste of the passionfruit. A match made in heaven :)
There are so many mangoes everywhere - the road to work is bumpy with fallen mangoes. Most locals do not like the mangoes that grow wild and so they just fall to the ground and rot. The trees are also huge, so it is very hard to pick them, but everytime I see some within reac… Continue

We have not had rain and the temperature is in the 30 degrees range so it is good for ripening tomatoes and chillies.
We had a lovely morning at the Adelaide Farmers market yesterday and my fridge is bursting with things to make chutney with. Maybe tonight, seems a shame to be inside on a nice day.
I don't like the sound of that snake!
Have a great day. Maggie

Hi Gillian,
i see the cyclones have reached land and been down graded but you still have high winds, thunder storms and lots of rain.
How is your lovely garden standing up to this weather?

Ontdekkers is on the other side of railway line and we are more nearer to Wilro Park but more closer to Hillfox centre...if you still remembered it.

Well, we grew up in Cape Town till three years ago we moved up here for our better jobs. We are much happier here as the weather is wonderful here, lot better than Cape Town.

It must be wonderful to live in Cairns...What happened to your yacht that you sailed around the world? My husband and I would love to ride on our motorbikes around the world but we can't afford and we have children to care for. Maybe when we retire, we might start to think what we can do with our lives.

Can you please send some photos of the tropical plants? I wonder if you mean the palm trees, all those types of plants. What vegetable plants do you have in your garden?

Hope to hear from you.

Hi Gillian
Happy New Year to you. I have been away in Perth for Christmas and it was good to swim in the Indian Ocean again. I had forgotten just how nice it is - quite unlike our cold southern seas down here where even in high summer you need a wetsuit to stay in for any length of time. Perth was lovely and the gardens there reminded me a lot of Durban with lots of bougainvilleas and frangipanni. I have had no luck with gem squash here. It just gets too hot now in the summer even though I am meant to be in a Cool zone (I am in Victoria up in the hills outside Melbourne). Thanks you for your offer of seeds. I got very excited to see gem squash for sale in a greengrocer in Perth as they are one of the things I miss most - you can get just about everything else here. I also really miss pink guavas - you can but white guavas in the Asian shops here but they are hard. Do you get pink guavas in Qld?

Thanks Gillian for your nice words. We love our garden, it is a great place to be and very productive. Now that we have some rain in the Hunter we can look foward to corn, melons, and many summer crops that seemed almost impossible a few days ago. It was a great Christmas present.
