http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A655535 this is an easy recipe you could try first. I always assumed the salt procedure was to make the onions not as acidic but what Glenn says makes sense to. I think I will give Glenns recipe a shot and see how it go…

Hello Gary, your recommendations concerning mechanical methods against the mites sound very interesting. Yes there is a bee club near to my home and they are working with formic acid. Not far there would be a course of instruction during one year, and I think this is absolutely necessary before starting again bee keeping, because it's one thing to read about and quite another thing to look and practice. But the needful preparation is expensive in money and time. First of all I've to find a job as nurse again after having paused 14 years in my age of 57. But without external income it's impossible to keep the farm. So I'm far from being retired and being bee keeper, but I'll try to find young compagnons to do it. In the moment I've 4 wwoofers helping me, one American, one German and two French students. These are all very nice people, it's a very good youth growing up there, I don't think I was so nice. Wish you a lot of wonderful honey! Lydia

Hello Gary, nice to be friend with you. Yes I tried to keep bees several times, but as long as there is no sure medecin against varroa desease, it's too difficult for beginners. I ought to have time to assist to instructions, courses, demonstrations and a lot of time for the practice. Being single farmer means to do all at once allone: kitchen, household, animals, gardening, wood sawing and properly I should labour the lands, but I refuse after having had an accident with the tractor. I am to old to learn all. I thought that my eldest son, a educated farmer and teacher for biology would continue, but apparently not. I can't imagine to return to the city so I have to continue. I would like to have bees and think to have them when once I would be retired. Is there any chance?? I don't know. Would I have this chance? I don't know neither, because I wanted to keep two dairy sheeps and several chickens and my garden too, so I'm going on, without being ever retired. I look forward to your reply. Lydia

Hi Gary, Thanks for reporting the issue with Anh Collins. I'm afraid she hit a large number of member's pages before I was able to intercept and ban her from the site. I apologise. I thought all the entries had been removed.

Right after I got your last message I got on the phone and called the county extension agent. He referred me to beekeepers in my county. The woman/wife told me they can't sell me any bees. They've lost more than 20 hives to colony collapse since 2006. Because of the shortage of bees, she recommended I order now (online) for next spring! And, it turns out, she and her husband head the local beekeepers association. The next meeting is this Monday night, and John and I will be there. We'll spend this year learning, and then start "keeping" next year. Thank you so much for the information you shared which prompted me to get moving. Beekeeping is something I really want to do, and I want to do it right. Thanks again. You are a blessing!

wow! Wow! WOW! I'm flabergasted! The wealth of information you just left on my page is amazing. Thank you so very much! I'm going to see if I can take your advice and get the bees as soon as possible now, with all they need. If I can't, I'll wait until next year and start early! Again, thank you! So glad you're with us now at KGI.

Gary, I hope to get bees myself this year. Maybe as soon as May. I hope you'll share your progress in the Beekeeping group. My dad raised bees when I was younger, and I have been wanting to do so for years. I don't recall it ever being difficult or time consuming, so I don't anticipate problems. Here, we've been establishing the gardens first. Bees next, then goats, cows, and pigs will follow. We're trying to get off the grid and be self-sufficient. Hubby and I both longed for this lifestyle many years, but it didn't happen for either of us until we came together 5 years ago. Oh well, better late than never!

I tried to add a reply to two posts and got an "error on page" note !! But then it asked me to sign in again !! Would that be the reason my posts did not work ?? Sign in was negated ?? Or is it common to have to do this occassionally ??

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
