October Catch Up! (copyright, Everett H. Scott 2009)

October 24th, 2009

The weather became grayer as the day wore on. The weatherman has alerted us to the last of 70 degree temperatures, at least until Spring when the northern hemisphere will once again tilt towards the sun. Yesterday, these climatic changes lead me into the garden where I clipped a vase… Continue

Bucks (More) Beautiful!

The reader may recall from Junes’ Toonmoose blog, that the Milford Historical Society’s garden tour, in which we were invited to participate, was canceled for this year. What the June blog did not point out, was that for the second time, we would be participating in the annual Bucks’ Beautiful summer garden competition, in which we were awarded second place in the combination flower/vegetable garden category last year. Anticipating the work involved, I delayed entering until the last minute. The… Continue

(June is) Bustin' Out All Over!!

To quote from Oscar Hammerstein III in Carousel, June is indeed, “Bustin Out All Over.” Those leaps of faith we began making in March, April and May, when the process of tilling the soil and planting seeds began, (our garden season officially begins on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, when Progress # 9 peas are planted, for luck), have begun to pay off in the form of silken lettuces, succulent sweet peas, piquant radishes and a myriad of green and red sprouts, that in the coming weeks will mature in… Continue

April Fools

We gardeners plod through the winter months, longing for the days when we can get back in the garden. “What we wouldn’t do,” we think, December through March, “to get our hands in the soil again?”
Then, no sooner has April arrived, than we are promptly overwhelmed with garden chores: spreading corn gluten meal? Check. Applying Milky spore? Check. Working wood ash, compost and well-aged manure into the soil? Check. Pruning? Check, Pea and Bean inoculant? Check.
It is as if we go from “low idle” t… Continue

I've looked around for those Marie Antoinette melons that you asked about and not found a single reference to them. In my own yard, I like a variety called Sugar Nut, but it is a hybrid from the company Seminis. I am still looking for a reliable-yet-tasty heirloom melon that will do well in my yard. Sorry for not being able to help!

I do admire the bees much as you do. I am fearful, though, of all that I hear of the disasters befalling them, and the smaller and smaller numbers of bees being born. This is a terrifying concept!

Thanks for the nice note.

I am on almost an acre with enough wooded area to put hive - I have a huge old tree that is loaded with ivy and at the end of summer it is loaded with honey bees, I am always amazed how many bees there are that visit the flowers on the ivy. I think he would be pretty safe. So far so good.

PS, I wonder if I kept one hive if it would be a bother to my husband who is allergic to bee bites and carries an epipen?

The four directions, the four elements, there are a lot of symbolism to four... :)

It's pretty!

From Wiki:

"The traditional kitchen garden, also known as a potager, is a seasonally used space separate from the rest of the residential garden - the ornamental plants and lawn areas. Most vegetable gardens are still miniature versions of old family farm plots, but the kitchen garden is different not only in its history, but also its design.

The kitchen garden may be a landscape feature that can be the central feature of an ornamental, all-season landscape, but can be little more than a humble vegetable plot. It is a source of herbs, vegetables, fruits, and flowers, but it is also a structured garden space, a design based on repetitive geometric patterns."

I understand now! I'm a bit more chaotic than that ;)

That's a real nice garden, Everett. Quite a challenge to grow things in that zone. Is there a symbolic significance to the way you laid out the herb/flower garden?

Everett, am in Conway. Love the longer growing season, as a matter of fact I garden year round. I cover the beds when we expect frost. Three years ago I went to Grenada and got these seeds from my SIL. The summer that I grew them I saved some seeds which never germinated. I have been trying to get some since then. In the Caribbean community they are called seasoning peppers. They are full of flavor, with no heat and are great to add to salads or soups. I will remember to share some seeds with you if I ever get a hold of some. I have not grown "Fish" peppers. Do you grow them? Last year a friend gave me an African "bird" pepper plant. I am hoping the seeds I saved will grow.
Your pictures are great to look at and I love looking at what others are growing.
