Hi Emily, McPete here, i'll think about the Food Not Lawns lessons and write you about them later, it's too late now. Glad to here you're starting one up out there. You can see some pictures at our site (claremontfoodnotlawns.com) and also get good ideas from the various chapters at foodnotlawns.net. We set up six events for Heather Flores, co-founder of FNL and author of the book 'Food Not Lawns', in our town and that gave us a lot of momentum, so if you could get her out there and do the same it would be ideal. We also have monthly meetings which begin with an educational workshop related to some aspect of growing your own food, followed by a 10-20 minute organizational/business meeting (whose lawn to tear out next, etc...), and then we have a vegetarian/raw/vegan/organic/homegrown/local potluck, over which we socialize, pick eachothers' brains, and build friendships and community. Heather has a document on the 7 or 8 steps to take to create a Food Not Lawns group in your town, it may come up on a search. My wife and i held our meetings at our home, very warm and welcoming, made some dishes (before the potlucks began), and a little beer and wine are always good for loosening tongues, raising spirits, bonding over. Introductions to include backgrounds, interest, and SKILLS, are great for linking like minded folks together for immediate projects. i would suggest taking on a simple, and fun project asap to build connections, interest, community, and to turn belief into reality, to empower the the group and its purpose. We attempt to tear out lawns and replace them with planted/designed edible gardens in a single day. This is incredibly motivating for all involved, the transformation is beautiful to share and confidence in the groups power to effect change in their world is profound, it takes a lot of hard labor, but many hands make light work, and we consider it akin to an Amish barn raising, also; the neighbors can't complain about a weeks or months long eyesore (they never know what hit them! HA!); it keeps the city from issuing citations for eyesores based on neighbor complaints; and it caters to our very common and pathological American 'need' for instant gratification. A great event for us to gain momentum and interest has been to organize a SEED SWAP. You will be amazed at the knowledgeable, seed laden folk that come out of the wood work to share what they have and know. In our experience (2 seed swaps, 50+ people the first time and 250+ the second time) the organizer/host (us) of the swap goes home with all the remaining seed, setting you up for the next swap, and until then, sets up your Food Not Lawns group with a seed bank. Also, order seed catalogs from the best organic, heirloom, open pollinated seed companies, like Territorial Seed Co., Johnny's Seeds, Bountiful Gardens, etc... there are many, and most are free, and if you're not already, you will be hooked on reading seed catalogs, and want to grow everything in them. It'll have you itching for more land. I also recommend getting John Jeavons' book 'How to Grow More Vegetables in Less Space ....Than You Ever Imagined Possibe'. This book will instruct you on how to grow twice as many plants in 1/4 the space with 4 times the yield, on 1/2 the water, with less time and effort etc...You don't have to be dogmatic about any one method, just pick the best of each as they suit your situation, but this one is amazing and has been very successful for us. All the attributes of this book lend themselves to small scale suburban farming success, which in turn bolsters the confidence, and thus the word of mouth and ultimately the membership of your FNL group. Hope this is enough for now, check out the photos on my page, things our group and my wife and i have done. i have been inspired by everyone's photos on this site, you should put some up when you can. Oh, another thing, document your group from the very start, it is motivating to build a history with people and projects, to show others that may want to join your cause, and create a reality and sense that what you are all doing is meaningful, important, and enduring. i think everyone likes to be part of something that others may see in the future, to help build a lasting movement or entity. Good Luck, though you won;t need it, because right now, and into the future, things are going our way! Over and out, your pal in the beautiful struggle, McPete.

Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year? I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
