Hi Eliza, I will try the Amaranth next spring, I am in Columbia, S.C., I though it was to hot for the plant in the middlands. But you have changed my mind. I should srart them in May?

Hi Eliza I grew one amaranth plant this year. It came in a mixed packet of salad seeds. It was only when it bolted and i compared it with Carols photo,s that i realised what it was. We never got to eat any. Mine was a deep red colour, and is somet...

Also, our favorite dressing for them is an imprecise mix of soy sauce, a little water (I use a strong flavored soy sauce), toasted sesame oil, a little raw garlic, a little fresh grated ginger, optional basil, and sesame seeds. We usually eat the...

They should do great then! They grow ultra fast. :)

I do live in tropical Australia, and most people dont plant anything in the summer, so I wanted to try year round growing. Supposedly amaranth will love our hot humid summers, and is actually a perennial here.
October 20
Great! Although the nicest thing about them is that they'll grow in the heat of the summer. Unless you are across the pond from the US and you have summer when we have winter, I recommend saving them for spring planting. :)
October 20
do you pick the greens when the plant is still very small? I have seen them grow very large, but do you only do that when you want to use the grains?
October 19
Your photos are lovely - and I have just ordered amaranth seeds.

Hi Eliza,

The whole point of the Permaculture Diary and Permaculture Calendar is to celebrate positive sustainability action - around the world! We have so much more in common than we have differences and it's about a global community acting locally so yes absolutely we want people from all the many corners of the world (excuse my maths).

Hi Eliza,

I love your photos! How would you like to do a story and photos for the Permaculture Diary I produce? Do you have high resolution photos? I have saved some I love and would really like to talk about contributing to the diary with some of your gorgeous photos - you obviousl.y know how to grow beautiful food!

I am happy to email you e-samples of my diary or you can check it out on the website: www.permacultureprinciples.com. I am seeking more US stories and want US people to support the Permaculture Diary and Permaculture Calendar which is a way of connecting us all globally and celebrate what we do locally.

regards,

Michele

We do have luna moths in Maine. They occasionally hang out on our back porch perched on the underside of the hand rail. I'm never prepared to take a picture, though I should be.

Thanks - your icon is beautiful. Mine is just a stock photo but yours is your own- much more original. I love the photo of the young woman with the luna moth on her nose! Wonderful pics of your bountiful harvest.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
