- Yep Michelle....I have grown wonderful leafy tomato plants with little fruit over the years due to lack of sun. I have a new idea now. I bought low sun "Husky Cherry Reds" and explained to then while planting that if they didn't bear fruit I would take them out to the shooting range and have my buddy have his way with a 12 gauge shotgun :-) I have given them MG grow sticks and will water them - after that they are on their own.
Seriously though - I hope they do OK this year.

Michelle W. Flannery said… - Me again. I was just reading your comments in the garden messups discussions. I live just east of Atlanta, and thought I might offer a bit of advice to your questions about tomatoes, although you sound like you've got a good idea of what to do.
The bigger the pots the better if you're depending on the soil. 12" diameter actually sounds pretty small. But if you add adequate nutrients you might be able to get by with smaller pots.
Tomatoes: you might pass on the Big Boy and get a patio variety. They're still available. Small and compact, but grow reasonably sized tomatoes.
Nutrients: try a tsp or so of Osmacote in the soil mix. Every 3 weeks, a bit of Miracle Gro in their water.
Think about putting the pots on wheels of some kind to move them around to the sun as needed. The soil mixture sounds okay. The sand will allow for good drainage.
You might also try upside down tomatoes if you're up to the challenge. There's been a big debate on this site as to wether or not it's worth it, but I am growing 3 upside down tomato plants as an experiment this year. I'm depending on nutrients more than soil. So far, so good. You can find my discussion about it in the Container Gardening group if you're interested. Best of luck with those tomatoes.
