Interesting article, thanks. You can expand your lettuce season through summer, by selecting those varieties developed for hot weather - there are now several to chose from. There is more information and sources in the article "Summer Lettuce" (on...

Oh that is good news, one of our piles is REALLY composted down. Very warm inside too!

I know your area approximately. My partner her husband's family, before he passed away, did SERIOUS gardening and orchards in the middle of lands the University was doing experimental ag.
That's about in that area of old Dona Ana, no?

I met today an El Paso Master Gardener, David Turner, at the Anthony Farmers Market, and also bought some organics from him and also Ed Provencio.
Do you sell excess produce or do you put it up in freezer?

Greetings, Darrol.
I know Kristen from the Buddhist meditation group on Sundays at the Unitarian Church, and know Dennis from there as well, both of whom have been helpful to me in my meditation practice.
I really like your art!
I have a large home and I let folks who need a place to stay camp here for a few months to get on their feet and if they are helpful around the place.
One is a lady who is an organic gardener and she is the brains behind the effort and I am at her elbow learning, learning.

But we started the compost bin and then another, adding oleander leaves and blossoms and the neighbors many oleanders lean over into our pool and deck area.
I read that is not good for compost.
Darrol, do you think we poisoned our compost piles?

Are you in actually IN Las Cruces?

could you direct me to some of the more interesting members/gorums here?

Gardeners are great "next year" philosophers. I ordered seeds this morning. I'm going to grow heirloom zucchini types instead of hybrids "next year". I planted yellow summer squash on the strip between the street and sidewalk this past season. They did relatively well. I got squash, but the soil is hard and poor, so I am going to add more amendments in the spring and see if I can make it more fertile and friable. I irrigate by letting the hose drip all night because it's so dry so deep; it gobbles the water up and I didn't get wilted plants even in the July heat.

I am sitting in a cool house. It's 5F degrees outdoors and snowing. I imagine you have some lovely things growing in your Las Cruces garden. What can you harvest these days?

Hi Darrol,
Thanks for the kind comments. I have not grown tepary beans. This year I tried winged beans, an Asian bean recommended in Mother Earth News and given to me by a friend. I don't know what to make of them and haven't eaten any. They did not seem to be very productive, but they do have a pretty blue flower and an exotic looking bean. I like to try new things, but usually end up liking best the tried and true that I am used to. I will look into tepary beans though.
