I think there are lots of untested myths in gardening, one is that flowers on rhubarb is a disaster. In my experience it is not a problem. I have let mine flower some years and at other times have cut off all the flower shoots. In the end I could ...

I moved a clump last winter, the whole clump, to a new spot. It has done very well and produced some of the best tasting rhubarb we've had. I forced it and got lots of smaller, tender stalks which IMHO are better than larger, tougher ones.

Hello John and thanks for the message. The garden has been keeping me busy of late and I've had some health issues again which has meant trips to hospital for tests etc which told me exactly what I already knew. The garden work sort of evens out around this time of year and we should be down to just basic maintenance again. The slight frosts are a real pain, have to go and cover up the tender stuff every night and uncover it first thing.

I am getting involved in the transition towns movement www.transitiontowns.org. Chesterfield had a meeting last week where they showed ''The Power of Community' film. Everybody was very interested in how peak oil would affect their cars but did not seem at all interested in food. I kept quiet for a while and then had to speak! The result was silence for a few seconds until some others joined in. It still amazes me that although more oil is just in food production, processing and distribution the car is still king! I guess people will just have to eat their cars when things get tough.

What about you? Garden OK? Finished teaching for the summer?

You have not been a pain. I agree with a lot of what you say except that I don't believe that resistance is futile. People do change governments. Having lived through the Cold War, in a small village sandwiched between a nuclear bomber air base and a very large ammunition store, I guess I grew up with the realities of state violence! There was never any thought that the Eastern Block would one day disappear yet I danced on the top of the Berlin Wall in 1989! People have the power to change things, it's just that most of the time they don't know it. In the past I have been depressed about the state of things but now I try to be positive, work for change, spread the word about food growing and the simple life, renounce violence at every opportunity, in short resist in every (small) way I can and believe that the world WILL change.

I know I've been a bit of a pain today, but on NPR (National Public Radio) this morning there were several features about "green" things, architecture in particular, that were fun. One was called Cal-Earth founded by an Iranian architect. Sadly he died recently. HIs book is called RACING ALONE about his quest for affordable responsible housing. Have you read it?

I just wonder what it'll all come to. I want to hide most of the time.

Today it's been snowing again, wind blowing wildly around my little hovel. I'm weaving cotton towels and wondering what chain of horrors brings these yarns to my studio.

I should have said what Spring? Woke this morning to a covering of snow and severe weather warnings! Not like last year when March and April were very warm.

If you get to the UK you are welcome and come and see the garden. We are located between Manchester and Sheffield in some beautiful, hilly countryside.

Lovely to meet you Colin.
I'm in the US, state of Tennessee.

My daughter-in-law is from just outside of London.

My maternal great grandparents came to America from Wales and paternals from England, not really sure of the exact place.

I am looking forward to touring all of Europe in the next few years.

Happy Spring!

Dear Colin,
Where in Derbyshire are you? I lived in the east midlands before I came to the states and Morris danced all over Derby, Notts and Leicester-shires. I loved the web-site and will send it to all my gardening friends. I certainly have not been able to control my garden, but I am trying less not to get in the way.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
