Ilex, I'm extraordinarily impressed at your luck with container gardening. Did your experiment with corn workout? It seems like the plants take up so much room for only a couple of ears per stalk. Clark

Hi Clark,

I used to live in Alexandria. You have a nice garden there. Is anything growing right now?

Glad you liked my tips!

Hi Clark. I saw your post on Mid-Atlantic Gardeners. I suggest you check out KGI member Tamra Stallings' page. She lives in Tennessee, but is very knowledgable about growing in any climate zone. I read one of her comments to someone about the same issue you have - when to plant. She said winter crops should reach maturity by Nov 1 (harvest date can be much later). She says when to plant is easy. Just look at days to maturity and count backwards from Nov 1. Do check out her page, and her website. Tamra knows so much about gardening, and she grows a large variety of winter crops that might peak your interest. I know I'm inspired to put more than cabbage and collards in my winter garden next year. My greenhouse is doing good. I'm still getting tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, bell peppers, and lettuce in abundance.

By the way, I used to live in your neck of the woods. As a young child I lived in Springfield, VA - I laugh and tell people that was when being in Springfield was living in the country. Later, my family lived in Woodbridge. My father was in the Army, stationed at Fort Belvoir. We left the area in 1968, about 2 years after Dale City was built. I used to fish at Burke Lake with my father, and I rememer visits to Lorton in the fall. I was enchanted by a little winding road up a hilly climb, and many colorful trees and the leaves ankle thick in places. We visited Falls Church too.

It's nice pulling out these old memories and thinking about such things.

You've got a really nice garden there - well planned and well laid out. Looks like you've got room to grow if you want to!

Your garden is beautiful! That little strawberry patch is a charmer. What I wouldn't give for the growing season you have in VA. I lived in Baltimore for 8 years, then Philadelphia for 2-- vegetables love the mid-Atlantic. They just tolerate Detroit.

I love your photos. The strawberry patch looks great.
I have no idea what VA stands for . As most of KGI members live in the USA maybe someone could add a gardening climate map of the States with a list of the States and there abbreviation. Then readers from outside the Us could follow the discussions.

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Donald you lucky to live in an area where you can start a new hive at any time during the year! In New York one could never start a new package in December! =8-o We'd love to see pix of your current hive. :)

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
