"the hens should have 1 young cock for 6 hens " I have found that I seem to get more pullets in a hatch if I use an older Rooster, say three years old and older... It also seems to me that if the cock is "easy" around the hens, not constantly "bot…

"what is to consider buying an incubator" I have used a Styrofoam table top model for many years. It has worked well for me but the interior, which is Styrofoam, is hard to clean. I would recommend finding one that is easier to clean.

Hoop House Journal; Planting onions

Yesterday it had gotten warm enough in the hoop house that I lost some extra seedlings I had potted up, 24 hours later and it is cold in the hoop house... cold enough that my hands got cold planting onions.

Tonight I planted 400 onion seeds in two speedling trays. That is great because the package said ''at least 300 seeds per package'' and it looks like I have enough seed to do another 200! Now if I can find another 3/4'' speedling under the potting bench!

If I had not been lax about changing… Continue

One step foreward... two steps back... the dance of life.

Boy was last weekend one of those days... everything I did I had to do over it seemed.

My lawn mower would not start Friday night so Allison could not mow the lawn. The gear on the end of the starter had finally stripped to where it would not turn the engine over anymore. With no way to pull start the engine I had to take the starter off and replace the gear.

The job looked easy with only two bolts holding the starter on. The first bolt was easy the second one.... well I had to cut a 1/2" wren… Continue

Hey there! :) No more shelless eggs since the one. I bought the girls some oyster shell thye very next day and the shells have never looked better. I guess that the hi-cal parakeets grit just wasn't cutting the mustard. ;)

Puff Daddy Behind Bars

No eggs yet, but I am checking every day. I guess we are on week 17 now.

I have a little problem with my roosters. My older one Puff Daddy (which my neighbor gave me) is a little too rough with the girls and I have him in jail now. I have 2 other confirmed roosters who are the same age as the rest of the flock and with Puff out of the mix the flock seems much mor calm and relaxed. Puff may have to be renamed Stew.

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date. There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…

Yes it's hot but very humid which is unusual. We are having a spell of days in the low 30s but tropical air is being pushed south by the weather systems up north and we are getting rain and humidity. The rain we love - the humidity we are not used t…

Mary, so you always shell them? I am entirely in the dark with these, and no more flowers :(... Did you only cook the peas fresh or did you leave some to dry? I posted a photo of the HUGE luffa I found, and there are lots more making an appearance -…

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
