Cynthia, “How do I pick things from it once I've secured the plastic over the hoops--just push the plastic up?” That works for me. “Should I use row cover inside of it, to beef up the protection?” Yes, row cover will add to the protection. You c...

Hoop House Journal; Planting onions

Yesterday it had gotten warm enough in the hoop house that I lost some extra seedlings I had potted up, 24 hours later and it is cold in the hoop house... cold enough that my hands got cold planting onions.

Tonight I planted 400 onion seeds in two speedling trays. That is great because the package said ''at least 300 seeds per package'' and it looks like I have enough seed to do another 200! Now if I can find another 3/4'' speedling under the potting bench!

If I had not been lax about changing… Continue

One step foreward... two steps back... the dance of life.

Boy was last weekend one of those days... everything I did I had to do over it seemed.

My lawn mower would not start Friday night so Allison could not mow the lawn. The gear on the end of the starter had finally stripped to where it would not turn the engine over anymore. With no way to pull start the engine I had to take the starter off and replace the gear.

The job looked easy with only two bolts holding the starter on. The first bolt was easy the second one.... well I had to cut a 1/2" wren… Continue

Puff Daddy Behind Bars

No eggs yet, but I am checking every day. I guess we are on week 17 now.

I have a little problem with my roosters. My older one Puff Daddy (which my neighbor gave me) is a little too rough with the girls and I have him in jail now. I have 2 other confirmed roosters who are the same age as the rest of the flock and with Puff out of the mix the flock seems much mor calm and relaxed. Puff may have to be renamed Stew.

With siding on these structures are heavier than you might think. We do have strong winds at times though. I am more afraid of the wind tearing the roof off. I plan to position the 2 structures face to face so that the roofs almost meet and then enclose it all in wire. I will also tie the roofs together with more boards.

I will have to save that vinyl for a possible furure upgrade. Maybe some plastic under the bedding will help for now. I am going to make an identical one and arrange them so that the roofs meet at a peak. The roofing was by far the biggest expense - bigger than I expected. I hope it survives the strong winds we sometimes get.

Thanks, Kate, for posting what you've saved! How did the seed saving for everyone else go this year? I saved seeds from several herbs that aren't ---I don't think--- heirloom varieties (fennel, dill, basil, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro) and some z...

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
