I have been growing potatoes this year. And luckily, I haven't seen any sign of Mr. infestans. Although, my part of the earth is dry, so I wouldn't expect to see him around.
I want to excel at growing potatoes because I love them. If anyone has some techniques to share with me please comment to this post.
I am growing them for the first time and by all appearances they are doing great. I can't wait to see what hidden beneath those vines. I am trying a technique I found in… Continue

Getting started

This is my first year gardening, built upon twenty years of dreaming about having a garden. I dug up half of my backyard (36 m2) and rented a community garden plot (12 m2). The goal is to grow enough food to enjoy fresh meals this summer and preserve enough to get us through the win… Continue

Slugs: cheap beer in shallow dishes. They crawl in and drown themselves, but beer also attracts them, so don't set the dishes in the middle of your plants, but off to the side.

Diatomaceous earth -- prickly stuff to sprinkle around plants. Don't breathe it. And you must dust again after rain or sprinkling since it washes into the earth.

Crunchy gravel paths between plantings. Gravel gets hot from the sun, and if it's a crunchy, sharp kind, it will also discourage slugs.

A bit of salt on them causes them to foam and shrivel up, but you have to be careful not to salt your soil or plants won't grow.

Copper also reacts with slug slime, so copper strips around plants can discourage them as well.

That's what I've learned in my 61 years about dealing with slugs -- of course there are commercial slug poisons/baits out there too which would be the last resort from my point of view, but may be necessary in extreme situations.

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
