Hi Ann! We have had a two week winter! One good snow and now the spring rains are here! Wow, the weather has changed so much! I miss the snows that came in October and left in March! On a positive note, our growing season is almost doubled! The jonquils sound so pretty; can't wait for ours- should be out in several weeks! Does your chamomile overwinter? How do you protect it? Do you plant peas on St Patricks day like we do in this area?

Hi Pamela,
We have only lived in our home for a few years. We have one plum tree that I just noticed yesterday has buds all over it. We've had a very mild winter in Tennessee...all my jonquils are blooming and my hyacinth, too. All the trees are budding. I still have parsley and catnip growing from last year. My chamomile has started to come out and LOTS of lemon balm is coming out, too. How wonderful that you have bushes from so long ago! Yum!!! Ann

Annie,

Hi! How are your fruit trees making it through the winter? Have you had a mild winter also? We barely had winter, two little snows! One good freeze lasted maybe a week! What do you do with your Blck currants? Our favorite is jelly! I love them ripe off the bush. Theese bushes are from my Granpaps parents bushes from the late 1800's. What herbs will you do this year? Do you grow lemon balm?

Annie,

You sound like me! I love my fruit trees, herbs and veggies! Our little fenced yard is big with beautiful gardens. Our ten year goal is to surround the perimeter fence with gardens. We are half way; two sides done. The corner garden is functional, enjoyable and productive. We pick fruit most summer long! We grow enough veggies to have fresh veggies. I love flowers and color too and love to sit in my garden. We have a sitting area with five seats right in the middle of the fruit garden where visitors lounge in the shade of the fruit trees and admire the gardens.mm My family ends up in my garden just to snack on strawberries or to sit in the shade of the trees! Hi shery, The reason farmer put thing in the cellar was it stayed 55-60 degrees year around & a dry cool mostly. The best thing is to store any veggies where air can circulate. One way is to build a 2"x4" frame with cross runner every 24", you can...

I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

Bees and other creatures pollinate our crops. Birds and toads eat insect pests. Many animals play a helpful role in the vegetable garden. How can we make our garden friends feel at home?

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
