You are quite right, the things which taste best are the ones you wait the longest for, and the things which have represented the greatest challenge. I remember the first guavas we got from a seedling, and the first passion fruit. Good luck with get…

Sorry to be a pessimist but kiwi can take a very long time to fruit successfully. First, you must make sure you DO have both male and female plants that flower at the same time. Second, pruning is quite an art form. Too many people either let them j…

I noticed someone was growing Asian pears. Do these need any special soil conditions as I was thinking of buying one this winter? Ordinary pears just curl up and die on our soil which is heavy clay, though apples thrive. Does anyone know if Asian Pe…

Definitely aim to progressively replace those black frames with new foundation as soon as there is a reasonably strong honey flow next spring. Don't force the pace, let the bees work at their own rate, and don't split the brood nest by plonking foun…

Thanks Glenn. I note that there are some self-fertile varieties but they all do better if given another pollinator. I guess this is what I must try, along with a stiff note to the seed supplier which sold me the tree. From what some New Zealand visi…

I've been trying to grow Acca or Feijoa Sellowiana. I've had the tree for a couple of years now and it's supposed to be self-fertile, but although it was covered in flowers this year, which I even tried to hand pollinate, not a single fruit set, not…

Adrian Fox replied to needles's discussion 'Top bar hives' in the group BeeKeeping
I'd recommend that any beginner goes with a standard moveable frame hive, such as a Langstroth. From what I've read about top bar hives there are problems if you don't do it right, especially from building of brace comb etc. Once you have learned th…

Hi Adrian,
I'm getting well underway with preparations for the thing in September now and wondered if you could confirm yet, whether or not you'll be able to make it and also about your two friends.

Thanks

Ian

I tried to add a reply to two posts and got an "error on page" note !! But then it asked me to sign in again !! Would that be the reason my posts did not work ?? Sign in was negated ?? Or is it common to have to do this occassionally ??

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date. There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…

HOW TO - ADD A LINK

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
