Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....
First type the text you want to appear.... ie IAN'S PAGE
Then go back and highlight the link text.
Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.
I would be happy to hear any comments you may have. This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.
I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.

Hi Everyone, I've started to collect together recipes from various posts on the site and put them all together here.
If you have a recipe you want to add on here, just post it on the site and leave a comment on my page telling me where it is and I'll go and fetch it back here.
They are organised in Contributor Order but I'm open to better suggestions!

Recently there was an excellent discussion about composting. I’ve pulled together all the various comments here. You can also watch KGI's video on composting here.

I have a suggestion for your next crop of tomatoes, if you put the seedling into the neck of a 5l water bottle which is filled with potting soil and chicken pellets. Water carefully until it has settled and the roots have had a chance to spread a little. Then turn it upside down and make a hole in the bottom (which is now the top) This container can be hung out of the way, high up on a sunny wall, the plant trails down from the container like a vine... and cant get knocked off the windowsill!!!! It is neat and the leaved dont get wet when watering. Cherry tomatoes work best as the big ones are a bit to heavy.
Thanks for the reply. East London is a lekker town, I went there a little while ago, although I didn't really realise that it was more of a dry climate.
While it is quite cold here in winter, it never frosts. For that reason my garden is growing happily, but very slowly. This last few weeks it's really started speeding up, and I recently had my first harvest. Took 2 leaves max for each of my herb plants and managed to make big salad for two people.
I'm currently growing:
Swiss chard : Grows Nicely
Lettuce : Different kinds - they're still new but seem to be growing nicely
Nasturtiums (Kappertjies) - growing well, keeping bugs away from the leafy plants
Afrikanertjies (don't know what they are in english) to keep bugs away
Basil (is speeding up now that it's warmer)
Thai Basil (grows like a charm)
Oreganum (delicious, but not really growing very quickly)
And some cherry tomatoes, but the container fell from my bathroom window sill and died.. at least I got 8 tomatoes from it..
Gotta go :)
Cheers

I nice surprise to see a fellow South African !
You are close to the Mother City and mostly enjoy mediteranian like climate as compared to our drought-like situation here near East London, about 60 km inland.
Does the winter sycle affect your balcony garden much? Elix does a great deal of pot planting and I must say her photo's put my small garden to shame!
I intend to go into herbs and mushrooms this year but will have to star after the rains come as it's just too hot and dry right now.
Do you have a favourite plant that I may try when I start my container gardening!
Look forward to you reply.
