Kitchen Gardeners

This is something you don,t see everyday. This picture taken yesterday shows them lifting the newly refurbished cap onto the old windmill, which is about a quarter of a mile from my house.
Next year i will be able to get locally milled flour for breadmaking.

Hi,
Here in South Carolina, the water driven mill is less important then the grind stone. That is people buy the stones for Landscraping.
So the mill are sold for the parts, not valued for it's whole. This is a shame, but only the owner of the mill can restore it, & most want the profit, not the preservtion. If anyone out there knows of a project for a water driven mill please let me know.

I really love this project. Does anyone know of water driven mills being restored? I visited people in Wisconsin who lived in an old mill, but it was inoperable even though the stones were still in place.

Hi Penelope
I'm glad you're feeling good and no longer wilted.
I will have to try the cracked wheat idea. It sounds good.

This photo and locally milled flour makes me "feel good". I've got two 5 gallon buckets of organic wheat. I handgrind a cup at a time to add to my bread, sometimes I leave it merely cracked for texture, soak it a bit before adding it to the dough. I look forward to more mill news . . .

Hi Nick
I will be becoming a member next year, your mill has been recommended by my in laws.
Yes i do live in your street, that is a coincidence!!
I also get that problem of changing pages from time to time, although i use firefox as a browser. I thought it was an intermittent 'O2' problem, who are our provider.

Hi Glenn

Yes, the intention is to paint the tower with some sort of black coating, as originally. First the rendering will need to be repaired by the city council (which owns the building), because it has deteriorated since it was applied a couple of years ago, and then allowed to dry out thoroughly before it's covered with the final coating. There are technical issues about the appropriate type of finish.

If you want to keep up to date with developments, visit the website www.holgatewindmill.org ... and consider joining the society for regular newsletters and free entry whenever the mill is open to visitors. Annual membership is £5 for an individual or £8 for a household.

I wonder if maybe you and I live in the same road. Are you the fourth G Fletcher on p434 of the current York area phone book? If so, I live further along the same road! You can look me up in the phone book to check.

I'm having problems with this website - my browser (IE6) seems to freeze when I try to access some pages including the home page. (I've arrived here via the link I was sent originally.) So I'm considering unsubscribing - a very brief stay! - and if you want to email me about the mill you can use the link on the committee page of the website.

Regards, Nick

Hi Nick
Thanks for your comments and the link to the photo,s.
I thought that as it was such a unique event [and there is a tenuous link to kitchen gardening], that i should post it here and let the world see.
What colour will the body be painted? Will it black as before?

Hello

Interested to see this here. I'm a committee member of the Holgate Windmill Preservation Society and a colleague sent the link to this page. I've joined KGI specifically in order to post this comment ... though I'm interested in veg gardening and have an allotment in Acomb.

I too a series of photos of the operation to raise the cap on to the mill tower and have posted them in a Flickr set at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nican45/sets/72157622769984327/. This link gives anyone access to view the pictures - you don't need a Flickr account of your own. My introduction to the set includes a link to my main set of Holgate Windmill photos, and another one to the society's own website.

If you have your own Flickr account, you'll be welcome to join the group devoted to the mill: the link for that is http://www.flickr.com/groups/holgatewindmill/. You can then add this photo - and any other relevant ones - to the group pool, which is open to any Flickr accountholder.

Thanks for this photo. You were watching from the west side, while I and most of the committee were standing near the crane and the low-loader which delivered the restored cap.

Regards,
Nick

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

First type the text you want to appear....  ie  IAN'S PAGE

Then go back and highlight the link text.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message.   Allow it and go back and highlight the text again
