They just grow like other palmsi;e a baby plant grows from the base,if you cut it the plant will not grow more baby plants and just grow. But if it remained unchecked it will produce many more.Yes in colder days over watering is not good that is why it failed to grow in green belts in Islamabad where temperature is comparatively low.

Hi Amna
You say you took the plants from the mother plant. Do they throw up suckers from the base of the mother plant?
I like to eat dates as well. We get them over here at Christmas time in little boxes with a plastic prong for picking them out of the box.
I grow my date plants as house plants, but if you overwater them when the temperature is low then they soon rot off.

Yes Glenn! They are Halawi dates. They were not ripe when the photo was taken. We harvest them when they are yellowish brown it was in mid July to August. Then we put them in earthen ware pots or hang them to ripe. This is the picture of a tree planted by my late father. He loved dates. He use to say a thing about dates"its head should be in fire and feet in water".It means dates require full hot sun and plenty of water.I have just planted twenty dates in my garden.i;e in september.I took them from a mother plant it is the best way to propagate them. They are all female plants ,so in the season I will bring some male flowers and will place them high the rest will be taken care by bees.If you want to plant date, get its plant and plant it in a rather hot area if you have snow then its hopeless. As it failed in cold area of Pakistan like Islamabad.

Hi Amna
These look like dates? Are they ripe yet? How long before you can eat them?
I have germinated a few date stones by putting them in a small bag of moist compost on top of our heating boiler.
The plants do not grow very well though, just not enough heat i guess.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
