Lisa,

It is my understanding that the kitchen waste must be covered with bedding (i.e. shredded news paper) to discourage fruit flies. That has worked for me.

Are you sure you are seeing fruit flies and not sewer gnats? S/Gnats look like fat fruit flies and are drawn to viniger in a fly trap rather then fresh fruit like a fruit fly.

We would get them at work if we let the floor drain traps go dry, thus allowing them to come up from the sewer.... we remedied this by dumping water in the floor drains every couple of weeks. You keep your worms in your laundry room, does it have a floor drain or sink that is not used often enough to keep the trap full of water?

Does anyone else have a problem with fruit flies? I have my worm bins (2) in my laundry room, and I started having fruit flies this summer. It's too cold here to leave the bins outside, but I take them out on sunny days and shoo the fruit flies away. Any suggestions?

Do you want a indoor worm bed or a outdoor bed?
Worms like bees can be harmed in winter outside best to start them in spring.
Indoor can be started anytime.

Everett, you need worms, a container, food scraps, leaf mold or newspaper, water and a handfull of vermicompost and time. In three to six months you will be rewarded. Before you do read:

Kristen- I don't use rubbermaid type tubs, I use the Gusanito stacking trays, and all the bottoms of the trays are mesh, so there is a bit more ventilation to begin with. Even so, my bin recently got a bit too wet and I'm leaving the lid off for a while til it dries sufficiently again.
