Everett great! When I do my vermicomposting workshops, I always encourage everyone to check out the website. You will enjoy the process.

Thankyou Letti, the website instructions were easy.
And for Joel, I think I'll put them in the laundry room.
Thanks

Everett,
Do you want a indoor worm bed or a outdoor bed?
Worms like bees can be harmed in winter outside best to start them in spring.
Indoor can be started anytime.

Everett, you need worms, a container, food scraps, leaf mold or newspaper, water and a handfull of vermicompost and time. In three to six months you will be rewarded. Before you do read:
http://whatcom.wsu.edu/ag/compost/Easywormbin.htm
and jump right in.

Vermicluture is something I've thought about for years and never got around
to trying. I think it's time. What do I need and how do I begin? What works
best for you folks? Thanks.

Hi everyone,
Has anyone tried the Vermicomposting Trench.
I find this on Redwormcomposting.

Kristen- I don't use rubbermaid type tubs, I use the Gusanito stacking trays, and all the bottoms of the trays are mesh, so there is a bit more ventilation to begin with. Even so, my bin recently got a bit too wet and I'm leaving the lid off for a while til it dries sufficiently again.

its amazing how much liquid is in produce! i think i just got overzealous with all of our seasonal food scraps. strumelia, thanks for the tips! i will implement them next time. do you use gravel and a drainage hole in yr worm bin?
Strumelia Comment by Strumelia on August 23, 2009 at 9:12pm
Kristen, part of the key is to not allow a whole bunch of liquid into the bin in the first place. Drain the worm's food and squeeze out excess moisture before adding it to the bin. Mix in more shredded dry newspaper and cardboard in the bedding.

Sorry about your worms. :(

my worms have indeed drowned. i am so sad. thank you for all the advice. i will definitely try the gravel and drainage hole next time around.

I have seen the really young kale leaves in salad mixes, but I prefer it cooked. Unlike collards and mustards, that need several hard freezes to sweeten up, kale does not. But at the same time it is the most cold hardy of all the greens. Last year...

Hi shery, The reason farmer put thing in the cellar was it stayed 55-60 degrees year around & a dry cool mostly. The best thing is to store any veggies where air can circulate. One way is to build a 2"x4" frame with cross runner every 24", you can...

I thought it might be good to have a group that discusses our pest problems so that anyone can find it if they need it.

Bees and other creatures pollinate our crops. Birds and toads eat insect pests. Many animals play a helpful role in the vegetable garden. How can we make our garden friends feel at home?

We will focus this group on different methods of preservation. Canning, drying and freezing are common, but do you preserve your harvest by some other methods? I hope that we can share methods and techniques in this group. Please share pictures!
