Do you want a indoor worm bed or a outdoor bed?
Worms like bees can be harmed in winter outside best to start them in spring.
Indoor can be started anytime.

Everett, you need worms, a container, food scraps, leaf mold or newspaper, water and a handfull of vermicompost and time. In three to six months you will be rewarded. Before you do read:

and jump right in.

- Kristen- I don't use rubbermaid type tubs, I use the Gusanito stacking trays, and all the bottoms of the trays are mesh, so there is a bit more ventilation to begin with. Even so, my bin recently got a bit too wet and I'm leaving the lid off for a while til it dries sufficiently again.

Kristen, part of the key is to not allow a whole bunch of liquid into the bin in the first place. Drain the worm's food and squeeze out excess moisture before adding it to the bin. Mix in more shredded dry newspaper and cardboard in the bedding.

- my worms have indeed drowned. i am so sad. thank you for all the advice. i will definitely try the gravel and drainage hole next time around.

Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....

Then go back and highlight the link text.
Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.
