Tomatoes

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

I had the same experience as you, Chris. My Marglobe came back from the dead! Thank goodness I was too busy/lazy to pull it after I thought it had bit the dust. ;-)

As always I get too anxious for spring or run out of the room for starts because I started too many and as a result plant too early..... This year the tomatoes went in the ground about three weeks before the last frost, I was covering them everynight... One night the temps dropped into the twenties, and a couple of the plants near the edge of the cover died. Or so I thought. The leaves were dead and there was only spindly kinda green spikes sticking out of the ground. I was too lazy to pull them out, and I'm glad I didn't because they are growing again!

I don't have very good luck with container gardening. I am fortunate enough to have a small ell shaped garden that is fun and plenty of work. I too have lettuce and some onions for salad although I like to just pull one and eat it. When the produce is young like it is this time of the year the flavor is milder and the "fruit" is tender. My peas havent started podding yet. There are several green strawberrys about the size of the end of your thumb.

Yes Thomas, gardening is great! In each growing season, there is always something new and wonderful to discover, even as long as I've been doing it.

I've been harvesting lettuce from my container garden this week. It took only two days for one of the roots I'd left in the pot to sprout!

Michellle, thank you for replying to my "accidental scientific" experiment. Several years I have had plants grow from seeds in the compost. In this case, however, the chopped off roots each grew a new plant. I can't be sure yet until I grow some new seeds and chop them to see if they will grow. Isn't gardening great?

Thomas, sometimes tomatoes don't need all the "work" we go through in order to survive and thrive. Many decades ago, when I was a child and my father was still a fledgling gardener (he grows the best tomatoes now!) he couldn't get tomatoes to grow well at all. But down in the pig pen, where we threw the kitchen scraps... the tomato plants were flourishing! Boy, them pigs was happy pigs!

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
