I know that I planted my tomatoes too close together, and have supported all six plants in one huge mass with posts on four corners and string around the edges. Originally each plant had its own stake, but they quickly outgrew them. My question is that right in the center of the "tomato plant mass" there are some yellowing leaves. It seems to be the lower leaves of each plant. Should these be removed or just left? I know with roses that it is best to remove all yellow leaves - is it the same with tomatoes? There is one heirloom black russian but the rest are cherry tomatoes, and they all seem very healthy and are proving about a punnet a day. I get one or two black russians a week.

Some indeterminate tomatoes species have fantastic growing possibilities and big production capacities in good conditions and warm climate(Mediterranean). One of my tomato plants " Mexican honey" covers 40 square feet and reach a height of 6,6 feet...

Hi Gillian. This year I planted my tomatoes in containers, but even so, they are still entangled with one another because they are closely placed. I pruned mine early on, following a video that Michelle posted some time ago. The two plants that I didn't prune are tangled masses that are now so heavily ladened with tomatoes that I'm just hoping the vines don't snap off before the fruit ripens! The video describes very nicely which vines to snip. Many of my plants are developing yellow leaves at the bottom too, and I agree with Michelle that this is probably just a sign of aging. The upper leaves still look good and the fruits look good too. Next year I'm going to use containers again, but larger ones.

I just spent a good hour cutting back and cutting away yellowing leaves. I noticed that the ylllowing leaves are the same branches that we are told to cut off in the video, and never have any fruit! I have a huge bowl of tomatoes, and my compost bin is choka block with cuttings. I think a marinated mediterranean salad for dinner with a herb and cheese omlette sounds good. Next year (crop rotation) the cherry tomatoes will go in a long narrow bed and i think that will work better. They seem to work OK en masse. One row wont be as wide as the two rows I have this year. Hopefully I can save some seeds from my black russian and those I will plant separately, each staked alone. I broke off two branches from the black russian today and now have green tomatoes - might introduce my hubby to fried green tomatoes since we saw the movie the other day!

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...
