Elizabeth,
Sounds a lot like the Tibetan Prayer Flags that one finds blowing in the strong mountain breezes in the Himalayans... the thoughts and intentions given up to the divine whether written wishes or prayers (what'st the difference?) are powerful energy for healing and change.. for sure... ;~) I would have like to have made it to your event! -m

I just had 500 people visit my garden last Saturday as part of a master garender garden tour. It was quite fun. I invited everyone to make a wind wish and s or draw something on a peice of paper which they hung on a tree with a peice of sting. By the end of the day the tree was full of wishes, hopes and prayers. All quite dear. I sold my books and calendars as well on Sacred Space and Monet's gardens. It was a joy to have so many visitors!

Hi Debra,
I'm so glad that you found this group. More than anything though, I'm so glad that your son has brought the joy and healing energy of gardening back into your life. Yay for him and you! Growing anything is magical and part of our soulwork... most just don't realize this. ;~) Welcome to this group... :~)

I read your comments and found group who goes much deeper than most who just plop a seed in the ground. I have had a garden of some sort forever. The last few years I haven't been able to garden. My youngest son this year revied some of my plot and planted seeds with his sons. Even though I couldn't do alot of the work, he did keeping asking me for advice. I felt connect again to live. It gave me foundnation, that I had been missing. One that that ugly C word tried to take from me. Coming home has been so great,I am so glad God used my son to show me what was missing. I will from now on how ever small grow something I can eat and something I can look at.

And to be able to connect with those who are educated in the use of these weeds is such a blessing.
White Pine trees have always been annoying to me. They drop sap, they are brittle and break in windstorms, they put out a lot of yellow pollen in spring, and then there is the pine spills in autumn to clean up... all in all I thought they were a very annoying tree... Until..I learned to make medicine from a Native woman using the White Pine tree!
This tree has helped me to heal an injury, and I have passed the medicine on to friends and they are using it too. Now, we can understand why the Native people in our area considered this tree to be Sacred!

Hi Carol,
Thank you for your beautiful comment that you just posted. I, too, have found such healing in a garden and see the plants as teachers and healers who are ready and willing -- actually yearning -- to help us. They so want us to tune into them and honor them.

thank you,
mare

I like to say that everything I needed to know I learned in my garden. It's almost entirely true. I came to this place 24 years ago completely broken as a person, but with a vision of what could be. In making that vision a reality while staying closely attuned to the natural world around me, not only did I heal but I found the very essence of me, as well as learning so many invaluable lessons. I find gardening to be a completely spiritual experience and can't imagine participating without reverence for the process, gratitude for the opportunity, humility in the face of the intelligence of Mother Earth that is so obvious if we let our minds be open to her.

Only very recently did I discover that many plants I had thought to be "weeds," and had carelessly pulled and discarded all these years, are actually very tasty, very nutritious and very hardy in my area, obviously. I felt abashed at my ignorance. And I asked myself why it is that we would hesitate to kill an animal that interfered with our gardening efforts, but think nothing of killing plants we consider undesirable even if a little research might indicate they are actually allies, or edible food. I mean, who ever thought of digging up a "weed" and transplanting it somewhere else where it can grow? Is animal life superior to plant life? And where does human life fit in? Still musing over all this as I grow in my ability to see plant intelligence (and get over the hubris of my traditional religious instruction as a child). I think plants talk to us but we just haven't learned how to listen.

I came to know my own worth as a person in my garden, a pivotal moment and "sacred" if anything ever was in my experience. Many other very special moments and special lessons. All of it weaving together all the strands that make up me, which in turn fine tunes my perceptions of other humans and the human experience on earth.

I am very, very happy to learn that I am in the good company of all of you who are a part of this group. That is a very affirming and gratifying, first-time experience. Thank you.

Wow, Elizabeth.. that sounds like a beautiful book. I should get it before my next Sacred Gardening workshop that I'm leading on June 14th in MD. Thanks for letting us know... I'm certain that it is a very wise and powerful book..

Congrats to you! (I'm an author too, but my book is far broader about how different people perceive the divine and experience it or choose not to.. called "If I gave you God's phone number...."

I wrote a book called Cultivating Sacred Space Gardening for the Soul. It is a wonderful book of heart full of ideas cross culturally to create Sacred Gardens and about ritual, life, death, life, garden metophores for life all written around the seasons. You can get it on my website www.elizabethmurray.com

Hi Beva,
Are you familiar with Plant Spirit Medicine, the book by Eliot Cowan? It is very apropos to your experience with that woman.

Also, I started a thread in growing herbs (I think that's the name of the group here on KGI) on growing smudge herbs... need to head over there to see what's transpired. I like that you defined 'smudge' here too... ;~)

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
