Mare,
Thank you... and I appreciate you posting this discussion.
Just yesterday, I worked with a woman who is very tuned into Spirit. We harvested branches from the white birch tree to make smudge pot holders. (for those who may not know what smudge is; it is a method used by the First People to cleanse and purify their bodies and spirits. This method typically employs sage, cedar, or sweet grass that is lit by fire and the smoke is wafted over the individual in a particular fashion.)
The focus yesterday was to help her to "feel" the white birch, and learn how to work with it to create what it was needed.
The end result was beautiful, and she had total connection with the tree spirit.
By the time she left, her step was light and she had a smile that was like sunshine. The birch gave her a great gift. We did a tobacco offering for the tree and Mother Earth, and after the smudge holder was completed, we took it to the Medicine Wheel so that she could honor it in front of the Creator, and dedicate it to the Sacred practice that she will be using it for.
It was a very good day.
:)

Wow, Joy, that is a beautiful entry here. I truly believe that there is so much that goes on in the plant world that most of us have tuned out. And indeed, they feel deep gratitude for good rain, wonderful soil and also when we attend to them from a deep place of connection and caring. The cool thing is that our senses wake up to their joy and beauty when we allow this to happen. Sounds like you had a magical weekend... and it was a little bit of a spiritual shift. Whoo-hoo.. Sometimes I go out and work in a garden, one of my clients' perhaps, and come home so blissed from it all. Kinda cool that I get paid to bliss out. ;~)

I had a marvelous feeling in the garden in this weekend, it's raining so I can't really do much other than water my greenhouse plants, so instead when I was outside there, I just "breathed" in the beauty of the plants that are playing in my yard. I really felt that the plants themselves were expressing gratitude for the rain. the rain had let up and so everything was covered with glittering raindrops as the sun peaked out for a few minutes. My delphinium looked like it was covered with diamonds. Nature is truly and artist. :)

Beva,
It's interesting... I just did a webinar with my Cherokee teacher that will go up on new website that is going to go live in the coming month (voiceofearth.net)... and she was talking about how we need to approach everything with respect. Because all have energy and all are conscious, even stones.
-- But you are so true with your statement about approaching plants with respect and seeing beneficial results. What is interesting to me is that respect over time evolves into reverence and actual love when the relatioship grows, changes and evolves.. and when we really feel in our hearts, a sense of love for our plants, then it's really quite amazing what the plants will do with their growth and fruiting. (of course, good soil and ample water and nice fertilizing helps too!)

I'll stop there.. but I could go on... ;~)
for the Earth and the healing..

Beva commented on the discussion that I started on Sacred Gardening, and I'm being rather forward here, but I'm copying her comment there to here, since I think there are several who might want to discuss these things here (I guess there too.. perhaps... oh well! ;~)

Hello Mare,
Michelle mentioned to me about your effort to start this discussion, so I thought I'd stop by.
As you know, if a gardener approaches the plants with an attitude of respect, then the results are typically more beneficial over all.
A Native medicine person knew how to approach a plant for it's medicine. Gardeners, can adapt these methods to their own need and gardens. I think there is much to be learned from the spiritual aspect of gardening... it has a wide and very diverse potential for discussion and sharing.
Personally, I work with Medicine Wheel and I highly encourage people to experience the cleansing of the herbs, and then explore outward to the other gems that we have waiting for us to notice them!
:)

The best place to seek God is in a garden. You can dig for him there.
