Kitchen Gardeners

I'm wanting to build a Medicine Wheel Sundial of sorts, and use an 8' birdfeeder pole as the center. It is the tallest, most plumb piece I have, and is also the center of the most life and activity in the yard. We finally got a sunny day here, and hope tomorrow will be as well so I'll be able to plot out the true north/south and get started on this thing.

I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions , ideas, etc. I want to use all native species of plants, perennial as well. Should fundamentally be nature-preserve of sorts, where I will only be the caretaker. It's for the winds, spirits, animals, insects, etc. I'm hoping to incorporate water, maybe a wabi basin type. Not sure which direction to put water in. I want to keep all elements natural and of found and 2nd hand objects as much as possible. Hoping to find a piece of plumb copper to use as the pole, but am concernedd that copper's nature to conduct electricity might pose a lightening danger. Any experiences with that. Please post any links or pictures.

I'd like to have the project done by the autumn exuinox, so there's plenty of time.

Where I am from the Delaware, specifially the Lenape were, & are the peoples from this area. I'd like to honor their history here.

Thanks, Kitty

note: I'll will cross-post this to the Native American Heritage group as well.

Hi Kitty,

I have not studied the specifics of setting up a Medicine Garden other than making the garden circular and using stones at the four directions and one in the center - and then connecting the stones energetically by calling Creator and Earth Mother to bless the space and moving the energy over the garden clockwise four times.

There is a very helpful book out though, called The Medicine Wheel Garden by E. Barrie Kavasch. I highly recommend you get it. I also believe that different native people's had/have different approaches to creating their medicine gardens, so if you can contact any Lenape people in your region and very respectfully ask them, they might give you some direction (or not).

You can always pray in the space as you make it, and see what speaks to you or guides you to do. You might well get some good direction that way.

good luck!

Hi,
I'll offer "dancing with the wheel" by Sun Bear. I have a Medicine Wheel on my property and I also teach people to build them. I did have photos and descriptions up on this page, but did delete them after a little bit of time.
If I can be of any help, I'd be happy to.

I am new and I don't really know how to get a hold of you privately or if that is even possible. I have never met anyone with the same name as mine. :) Is that your full name or is it short for anything? my email is beva1960@yahoo.com

Also, check out http://www.enature.com for plants native to your state. It also says what is endangered or if it is dangerous. Good luck.

Good info. I think it is very important to maintain the health of our native species for the sake of the wildlife and our lives.

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
