I misspelled Gaia, sorry! Re transition towns and permaculture, the two seem to fit together well. Hemenway talked about sharing fruits with neighbors. Each neighbor had different fruits to share, so everyone got a large variety of fruits. He regarded it as permaculture spread across several yards, but it relies on neighbors who are willing to share, which seemed to me to be more of a transition town concept. Of course, permaculture ideally is a society wide philosophy regarding resource use. The 3 concepts do seem to intersect & overlap: transition towns, permaculture and Kitchen Gardeners.

Was interested in your mentioning transition towns needles. Through OCA, Organic Consumers Assoc. I became aware of the book The Transition Handbook, From oil dependency to local resilience. Main thesis: present reliance on cheap oil (compared) or any other fossil fuel, long distance shipping of food and other goods and it's impact on climate change is not sustainable. Solution: build local resiliance that supports small farmers and businesses and promotes urban and rural home gardens. Puts Kitchen Gardeners right up there with a growing social concept! More power to us all!

I just read the second edition of Giaa's Garden, a great permaculture book. It has a very interesting chapter on urban permaculuture, reminds me a bit of transition towns. Anyway, I'm using David jacke's book to try and develop a perrmaculture design for my 2 heavily wooded acres. Anybody else out there in the Northeast?

we live in the city but have bought a 42 acre property on the east coast of nsw (australia). bit by bit and with a long term plan of eventually living there we will 'permaculture' it. we've had a consultant advise and avidly read all we can. it's so rewarding to hear of other's experiences, and we hope to share ours too. i have a bog that documents the progress.

I just put up a framework for my passionfruit to clamber over, above the herb spiral. There is enough room to walk under it, but hopefully it will create shade for the herbs during the hot summer weather. I also just love the look of ripe passionfruit hanging below the vine, and this doest happen when it grows on an upright fence.

Hi - just introductions great to find the group. We are Permaculture Farmers and educators here in Queensland Australia on 540acres. The climate here is hot in summer (when in rains) and cold in winter.. so sometimes a challenge better with Permaculture Principles. Live our life to be as self sufficient as possible and promote the need for wholesome food grown sustainably so currently work with schools and community gardens. Anyway great to be a part of it... Megan
