Hi Carol
I grew up in Waterdown above the escarpment. We used to find them just outside the Freelton Bog. Not sure if they are still there. I raised my children on Garth Street and my grandkids on Cannon Street.

Greetings everyone :D

Sice we've been having such odd weather this year, I decided to try getting my garlic in the ground this past weekend. Now I hope that it'll all grow nicely.

greetings Sheryl!
this year ended up being a disappointment, mushroom-wise. Got a few dozen buttons, that's all, and I did not see any puffballs up here this year at all. I am sure it was the unusual weather we had this year. I remember when I was growing up n Hamilton, my father would come home with the occasional puffball and my mom would slice it and fry it in butter, We used to oick them at Chedoke Golf Course,( below the escarpment in Hamilton).

I remember finding huge mushrooms that look like balls. Puffballs I think my Dad called them. They are great to eat. Mum used to fill them with meat and vegetables. Dad also used to dig them up and put them in the root cellar. Strange things you remember as a kid. :)

Hi Sheryl
I think you have come to the right place. There is a wealth of information on this site and everybody is helpful. I use the search box in the top right hand corner of the screen.
You will have to post some before and after pictures of your progress.

Hi Everyone

My name is Sheryl and I have just recently moved into a home with a big garden. I'm used to a very small garden so this will be a new experience. I also have a huge pantry and a root cellar that I am trying to find some information on. Thanks for allowing me the pleasure to meet all of you.

More on 'meadow mushrooms' (as they are listed in my mushroom book)...they have just started to emerge- picked a few dozen BIG buttons recently. My favourite mushroom pasture always delivers!. Haven't even looked for puffballs yet.
Yes these mushrooms are always very large. It is such a thrill to dice up one mushroom and fill a large freezer bag!!
Cielce Comment by Cielce on September 22, 2009 at 7:59am
wow! those sound like huge mushrooms! I hope you find some this year :D

on a side note, my plants are loving the rain these past few days. It's strange that we had such a wet summer, but september has been very dry. Crazy weather!

I tried to add a reply to two posts and got an "error on page" note !! But then it asked me to sign in again !! Would that be the reason my posts did not work ?? Sign in was negated ?? Or is it common to have to do this occassionally ??

Wow Sandra! You've asked for an awful lot of information! Start by checking for your "predicted" last frost date. There are frost charts online, but the quickest way for you, I think, is to call your county extension agent. He'll be listed in the ph…

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
