Has anyone planted garlic in Ontario, zone 5a? When is the best time to plant?

hmm, I had planned on planting garlic last year, but the snow came and no garlic was in the ground. I've picked up a book though, called 'From Seed to Table(Janette Haase)', and it suggests planting garlic for the summer to be eaten 'green' like green onions, and then overwintering garlic being planted in late sept, early october time.

We have been planting our garlic in the fall, like mid-October. It has come up beautifully this spring, and I will harvest it in September I guess. last year it worked well, so we will do that again.
I am on the Bruce Peninsula near Owen Sound, I dont know what zone I am.
Maybe this helped you.

I think it depends on the type of soil you have as to when you plant. I think garlic is tougher than it looks, but no plant likes being sat in cold wet soggy soil. If you have free draining soil with plenty of compost like in a deep bed then autumn is a good time to plant. If not leave it until spring. If in doubt go for the 50:50 approach. Plant half in the autumn and half in the spring and see which does the best.

My original post was from last year. I ended up planting 50/50 (fall and spring). I found the fall bulbs were bigger and matured faster. This year I planted all of my garlic in late October (Ontario, zone 5a). This is early enough for the roots to get started, but not so early that the tops develop before winter.

Hi Gillian We used to grow Pigeon Peas in Natal (north coast) and cooked them with lots of tomato, onion, chilli = and garlic. They can make your hands really black when you peel them so wear gloves. They are worth it though as they are delicious.…

We sampled the cucumbers I pickled just before Christmas and while the flavour was good the skins were tough. They are gherkins or pickling cucumbers. Should I have peeled them? I would be grateful for any advice.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
