greetings Sheryl!
this year ended up being a disappointment, mushroom-wise. Got a few dozen buttons, that's all, and I did not see any puffballs up here this year at all. I am sure it was the unusual weather we had this year. I remember when I was growing up n Hamilton, my father would come home with the occasional puffball and my mom would slice it and fry it in butter, We used to oick them at Chedoke Golf Course,( below the escarpment in Hamilton).

I remember finding huge mushrooms that look like balls. Puffballs I think my Dad called them. They are great to eat. Mum used to fill them with meat and vegetables. Dad also used to dig them up and put them in the root cellar. Strange things you remember as a kid. :)

Hi Sheryl
I think you have come to the right place. There is a wealth of information on this site and everybody is helpful. I use the search box in the top right hand corner of the screen.
You will have to post some before and after pictures of your progress.

Hi Everyone

My name is Sheryl and I have just recently moved into a home with a big garden. I'm used to a very small garden so this will be a new experience. I also have a huge pantry and a root cellar that I am trying to find some information on. Thanks for allowing me the pleasure to meet all of you.

More on 'meadow mushrooms' (as they are listed in my mushroom book)...they have just started to emerge- picked a few dozen BIG buttons recently. My favourite mushroom pasture always delivers!. Haven't even looked for puffballs yet.
Yes these mushrooms are always very large. It is such a thrill to dice up one mushroom and fill a large freezer bag!!

wow! those sound like huge mushrooms! I hope you find some this year :D

on a side note, my plants are loving the rain these past few days. It's strange that we had such a wet summer, but september has been very dry. Crazy weather!

yes, wild mushrooms! the last 4/5 years we have been harvesting these beautiful mushrooms, some larger than dinner plates. They grow (as far as I have been able to ascertain) only in cow pastures, NEVER horse. Neither of us have had any negative reactions to them. I clean, cut up and freeze in baggies. Then, there are shaggy manes, too. Soon!

field mushrooms? are you asking about wild mushrooms? Unfortuantly I don't know much, I'm not a big fungus fan :) lol

Hey Carol :)

don't feel that way :) any question is a good question!

As far as I know 'seed potatos' are generally grown commercially and then stored over winter and sold to us gardeners. They may be at lower risk of desease because of the way they are stored. If you want to save some of the potatoes you grew this year for seed for next year they will grow. The little green tomatoe looking things are actually seed pods, I'm not sure how well they will produce next year, I've never planted the seed pod, there may be some cross polination issues, I'm not sure. If you have left over potatoes next spring and they are sprouting from their eyes, just cut the potatoes up so that there is one sprout per peice and they will grow great! You can do that with other potatoes you buy (gorcery/farmers marrket) as well, to try different varieties if you want :)

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
