Hi Matthew,
I still have tomatoes, peppers, basil, eggplants, a few ripening melons, lima beans, sweet potatoes, and okra going. For fall I have broccoli, cauliflower, small carrots, beets, green onions, radishes, and spinach and kale for after the frost in a sheltered spot. My stuff grows slowly due to shade, but the trees are starting to lose their leaves, and I'm hoping for the best. This is my first fall gardening attempt, so I'm trying a little of everything to see what will work.

Hi Matthew,

Yes, the group is growing...congratulations, you are a good leader.

My fall garden ( besides the herbs, considt of greens...turnip, collards, kale, spinach and mustard. Okra, peppers and tomatoes are still producing from the summer gardens.

Today I have been busy cleaning out the oregano and lavender beds..

Moving some of the lavender to a larger location.

And you ?

Hey C.K.,

You're close to me here in Jackson. I should head out your way to check out what you have going on.

I'm interested in growing fruit and nuts next Spring so I would love to get some advice on it.

Thanks Kevin. seems like most of what I grow for fall and winter are brassicas, kale, collards, raab, etc. So I am all too familiar with the loopers and BT. Row covers help some to. This year the loopers are not as much of a problem as the harlequin beetles, and they crawl under the row covers. I have been hand picking, but that is very time consuming.

Yes C.K., I now remember where Savannah is located.

My family does a retreat every year and a few years back we held it at Pickwick.

Beautiful are then, haven't been back since, although we do go to Lawrenceburg on occasion.

I have a large basket of walnuts in the drying barn now...from last year.

My grandsons enjoy cracking and eating them when they are here.

I use to pick the meat and make pies with it, but don't really have the time anymore....it is so good though !

One more for Bea,
Go west on 64 through Pulaski, Lawrenceburg, Waynesboro, Savannah across the Tennessee River bridge through Crump and just before you get to Adamsville, right at the Hardin / McNairy county line, thats where I am.

Bea,
Yes, its black walnuts, complete with black fingers from opening them and the stuff that comes out of the roots and kills all the grass....

Tamra,
Here is an excellent website from the UT extension service on when to plant fall crops. http://www.utextension.utk.edu/publications/spfiles/sp291-g.pdf
I went to the county extension office and talked to the agent and he gave me that site.
I am sure I am one zone from you as I am less than 18 miles from the Mississippi border near Pickwick Lake. We have about two weeks longer before the earliest frost date than you in Nashville.
Cauliflower grows fairly well but you have to be real careful about cabbage looper worms. I use something called bacillus thoringensis or BT. Its a bacteria that does not affect plants or bees or animals or even humans. It is very deadly on worms that eat your garden plants and also tent caterpillars and bag worms. It comes under the brand name Dipel and costs about $4 at the local ag store.
Another excellent natural insect killer are beneficial nematodes. They really get rid of grubs, fleas, ticks and the like. A bit more expensive but they are fantastic.
Back to the cauliflower, it grows well as long as you give it water and keep the heads covered by the external leaves to keep it white.
Now that I look at things, sorry for getting so long winded.

Hi C.K., welcome to the group. We are in Lincoln county, just outside the city of Fayetteville.

I assume you are speaking of black walnut trees...we have one that reaches to the stars...*smile* we often talk of taking it down...because it hinders what can be planted close by....but it is such a lovely tree I can't seem to be ok with its removal.

We just planted the fall garden, which consist of kale, purple top turnips, turnip greens, collards and more cucumbers. Love those cukes ~

Delighted to meet you~
