Hi, everybody! When I decided that I wanted to be more active in spreading the word about growing food, I joined the local Master Gardeners group since it has an education mission. This turned out to be a perfect fit for me.

I have worked with a few school groups that were beginning food gardens, I volunteer regularly at a Plant-A-Row-for-the-Hungry garden, and I get to talk about food gardening A Lot. I am already signed up to give two veggie-gardening talks in March.

In addition, a year and a half ago I started a garden-focused blog. It gets some readers, but I have no idea how many. Every now and then I will be talking with someone new about gardening and the blog comes up, and it turns out that the person already reads my blog! Always a surprise.

Also, I met Kate Copsey, host of two gardening shows on Radio Sandy Springs, through the Atlanta Seed Savers group here, and I've been a guest on her show (thanks, Kate! I love to talk about growing food).

Before starting to work actively toward helping people with their food gardens, I talked with quite a few neighbors about it. My garden is in the front yard, where it is visible to the world. The corn is usually a bit of a traffic stopper, so just gardening where everyone can see was a good start toward talking with more people about growing food.

I am interested to know how other people got started and how else they are working toward helping people with food gardening. I hope more people here will post their stories!

Joy, thanks for the video post. It was fun to see it again. hat garden is going strong. The parents and teachers are more involved. The school lost some of its grant funding so they are working extra hard to find help.

Yes, Joy - I welcome gardeners from all over - if 10am is too early for west coasters then I do pretape a few. Today I have Rose Marie Nichols McGee and in 2 wks Renee Shepherd will be on. We also have regular gardeners, community gardeners (hopefully next week it will be Fiskars who sponsor community gardens) and farm market gardeners too. Hi all - it's great to find a group of like-minded people. I also have just written a book. It's "Get Growing" and is a guide to getting started written for New Zealand children and their grown-ups. However, I'm sure the basics of growing are universal - just the seasons are upside down.
When I set out I wanted to help keep alive the practical skills, language and sheer pleasure of growing your own vegetables and fruit - all things that are in danger of being lost in supermarket aisles. I was really inspired by Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemna. What a great book!

Thought this was interesting: "Why Non-Profits Are So Good at Social Media" by Harvard Business Review

I am working really hard to determine the best ways to shape and share our message/voice in the dialogue about local food / childhood obesity & wellness / pedagogy in non-classroom based environments / community farms and farm gardens.

I would love any insight, information, or resources that people can share.
