Kitchen Gardeners

I was digging in my composted rabbit manure today and found lots and lots of white grubs. They are fat and a little larger than a carpenter bee. I really don't know what these things are or if they're all right to have in my compost. I picked them all out and threw them to the chickens. :)

Anyone know what these crazy critters are? Beetle larvae maybe??

Could you post pics? It might help in identifying the little buggers (pun intended, lol!)

I had grubs like that in my compost as well, I thought they were cutworms, but now searching online I am not so sure - maybe they hatch into June bugs.

ewwww that's even worse!

John says they are grub worms (fish bait). Do a google image search. They eat grass roots and can ruin a lawn. They probably entered your compost through clippings or dirt. There are a lot of nutrients in compost to keep them fat and happy. We're in a hurry to get to an early appointment today. Will offer more later.

They are grubs and that is the favorite food for moles. I am not sure if you have moles in your area but they are a big problem in Florida. Milky spore is suppose to be the safest way to get rid of grubs. I have never had grubs show up in the compost - yet.

Grubs are the larvae of any of a variety of beetles, bees, or wasps. They could be the larvae of pests or they could be the larvae of beneficial insects. Please check with your cooperative extension to see what kind of grubs they are before you go squishing them with your gardening gloves!

They look alot like the grubs in my area, I know the ones I have tend to grow into June bugs. EW Ew ew!! Each one I see gets squished! If there are too many they can eat the roots off your grass and leave ugly brown patches, also racoons, skunks and other animals.

Thanks everyone for the input!!

I was so worried they would harm my compost or garden in some way. If they harm grass, then fine by me! :) Grass in my garden is one of my pet peeves. :) As long as they leave my other plants alone and don't get into my Daddy's lawn. :) I'll probably keep terminating them anyway. The hens will like that!

Again, thanks everybody for the replies!

They are either May or June Beetles. Both can live in the ground in the Larvae stage for 4 years before becoming a winged insect, which is why they can become such a problem.

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.
