Hi Everyone. My name is Sheryl and I live in St Catharines Ontario. I just moved in to a home with a huge garden, a large pantry and a root cellar. I have already started looking through the seed books for next spring. Can anyone make suggestions on the varieties that will keep in the root cellar? THX.

Hi Katrina,
You must mean the tuberous Jerusalem artichokes - or sunchokes. It's really easy - just buy a couple of the larger sized ones in the early part of the year, and plant them a couple inches deep in some decent soil. If there is still a danger of frost, give them some extra mulch for a while. Then look out, as they can become a weed after a while, depending on your soil, and how thorough you are when you dig them out in the fall. I'd give them a patch all on their own. Kind of like horse radish! lol And there are different varieties - white, yellow and red, just like potatoes. Can you share a good recipe for them?

I'm not too sure about the rules and regulations for Pakistan are, as far as importing seeds. I think you'd have to contact your government to find out what can be imported into your country. It would be nice to share seeds with you.
Good luck and all the best!

Grew up in Newfoundland. Now live in New Brunswick. Been gardening for years, small scale now. Just started some seeds indoors. Tomatoes, peppers & herbs. Have heated floor in bathroom. Place tray in there till they sprout. Then move out to florescent light or window. Been long winter; still little snow left in yard.

Hello fellow gardeners, anyone from east coast? I haven't started any seeds yet this year but have some plants I've over wintered out of hibernation. I have a greenhouse on the southside of our garage but haven't started anything in there yet. This time last year, had a big production going with the heat on and by the time it was ready to plant everything out, everything was over crowded, over grown and the electric bill was way over budget! So this year everything will be later especially with the weather we've been having!

HI!

yep, it's that fine time again! It's the beginning of March and seeding time is here!!! Woo hoo!!! :c)
Leeks, onions, lettuce, celery, celery root!, arugula, kale for summer, endive?... you don't want to jump the gun too much though. no point in wasting the seed and soil, and your time most importantly. Wait another couple weeks for a few more things, and then every 10 days to 2 weeks or so after... There's still a couple months of time to get your outdoor ducks in a row! :c)
Happy gardening,
jeff

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
