I cleaned out the chicken coop and added all the well used straw and all that great manure to a compost pile which I will keep covered as we are getting more rain and I want the worms to come up and enjoy the goodies and if its not covered it get to wet and takes to long to dry out.

We had a great speaker deliver a talk on composting to our community garden members - she really fired up the crowd. It is very satisfying to see 40 people 'get it' suddenly.

We got a HUGE delivery of Agromin's finest compost for our community garden. On the Antonio Garden Page, there is a video of building the garden. The pile of compost is smoking (well, actually steaming) in the pictures as we dig into the middle of the pile (about 2 minutes into the film)... Or you could just click here to watch the movie without the propaganda ;)

Agromin is a local company that now recycles for every city from Santa Barbara to Riverside. The produce 100 tons of compost every single day, and we are pleased that they share it with us!

We had our first compost workshop at my Santa Monica community garden last Sat. including all the compost we could lug into our gardens that was brought in and provided by the city, plus giveaway seeds and sprayers. The good news is that we'll be having these terrific workshops,compost included, three or four times a year. I love the look and smell of all that black gold in my garden!

I just checked on my home potager & my tiny seedlings, which had just begun to peek out when they got hailed on. Twice! I think we all survived, tho.

Hi Mike...I ventured down to the garden this morning and was relieved to see everything okay. In fact, all of my seedlings look better than ever! I did have them protected somewhat with floating row covers and I think that helped.
Thank's for your terrific website/blog, etc. Great information on them.

Sharon,

I am just up the coast in Ventura County, and we have had tornadoes, lightning, and torrential downpours. I measured 7" of rain in 3 days. That is half our annual average.

I went down to our new community garden today and we are surviving quite well. The day before the sky opened up, we spread about 15 yards of wood chips over the entire garden area and the dirt parking lot. We have had no run off, so the mulch did its job. I hope you faired as well.

We do have crops coming out already, and new elated gardeners discovering the wonders of really fresh food. I put a new video of our garden's construction through to kids enjoying themselves. Check it out at our Camarillo Community Garden blog.

With all this rain and wind it will be a miracle if my community garden plot in Santa Monica hasn't floated into the ocean!
