Kitchen Gardeners

In case you haven't seen the headlines, the Obamas are planting an 1100 square foot garden on the South Lawn. Hurray! It's a huge victory for our campaign to plant high-impact gardens in high-profile places.

So, since we have some momentum, what should we try next?

Roger, congratulations! I was thrilled to see all your hard work on this issue come through. How about state governers next?

Great idea!!! Organic gardens should be incorporated into the prison system too, a la the movie Greenfingers.

Small starts could also be the local jails, there are inmates serving 6 months or more, that could pass on to the newcomers, even for the short-timers it would help pass the time and sure would be a plus for the kitchen. I am working toward this end here in my county.

"Victory"! Yeeeha! Woohooo! Thanks very much for representing me in achieving this amazing turn of events. I always feel my contribution is so small, but to this issue I have given a big piece of my life, from my own garden, to other gardens. This makes me very happy. This will have a huge "ripple effect." And, of course, we continue to plants the seeds in everything we do!

1. As at the Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., include the "Three Sisters" in the vegetable garden - tall sunflowers to support pole beans (like "Blue Lake"), with squash (zucchini and/or butternut or acorn squash) underneath for "mulch".

2. Do the Obamas not like tomatoes? Earlier I suggested Big Beef and Juliet tomatoes or Brandywine Sudduth Strain.

3. Regarding herbs, consider lovage for a beautiful 4' x 4' "bush" of intense celery flavored leaves that can be
frozen for winter stews, meat loaf, tomato sauces. It's beautiful in late spring with white flowers too.

4. Somewhere, include "Heritage" raspberries in a 20' x 10' patch. We grow them is in our suburban front yard,
and until late August-October when it is very productive, it just looks like a bushy hedge. What great
freezer jam!!!!! pies! topping on ice cream (with a little stevia added for extra sweetness). Kids love to pick
them.

Hurray, and good for you, Roger, for organizing and leading this movement. One day your efforts will get a mention in history books written about the turning of the US from exploitation of planetary resources to mindful stewardship. Well done!

As Heather suggested, state governors' mansions lawns next, then mayors...

Seeing the article in the NY Times was so exciting and a number of us Twittered about it to help spread the news. Congrats on helping to make this happen!

Congratulations!! I had a very stong feeling that the Obaba's would make this happen at the White House. What a great feeling for you after all your work over that last year.

What about on University and college campuses or rooftops in NYC?

YAY! Looks like they are planning to eat plenty of salad, but where are the tomatoes, onions, peppers and garlic? Did I miss it?

Ok, this is great but there are nearly 200 counties on this planet and what I think our next step should be is that we should be working towards kitchens gardens for the poor of this planet.
Many countries have huge populations who have no food.
It is fine for us who are wealthy to discuss our gardens but it is time now for us to address reality.
Now we must work to "promote the localest food for all globally" for all countries where people are starving.
This is what we must do now!

Maggie,
You are so right on this subject, especially with the recession. People need to realise that growing your own food can save you money, and you can be healthier. You actually dont need a lot of space either. One of the problems with places where people are starving is a lack of water for their crops. It might be easier for people to manage just a small plot for their own use. Also just grow the things you like to eat - so many people try vegetables they dont like! My daughter was in Tanzania and when I visited her there she said that the government was trying to get the locals to grown GM seeds. Nice sweet juicey corn instead of the hard dry local corn they were used to. The problem is it did not grow without watering, and also the seeds could not be saved. Why do we always think we know better and want to change the way they have always done things. I think growing native plants is very important because they have already adapted to the climate and the conditions.
How are your seedlings doing?

take care,
gillian
