Kitchen Gardeners

I am researching an article on Victory Gardens and would love if someone could give me some names of books that I might gain some info from, websites would be usefull too. It is for a magazine article and will focus on reviving the Victory Garden and how to help people start a community garden and what activities they can participate in. Looking forward for your ideas.
Thanks
Kathy

Susan, does the book have an entire chapter devoted to the Community Garden that I would be able to use for help in developing my article? Thanks

Speaking of inspiring books, I have a copy of the old, old edition of the Rodale book Organic Gardening. I love it. Very inspiring old black and white photos and advice.

Also, The Victory Garden TV program has become rather boring lately, lots of talk about ornamentals and very little about growing food, except an occasional chef using "fresh" ingredients that don't always come together in my garden at the same time.

I've about decided I need a full-time gardener in order to make things look as lush and trimmed and weed-free as so many lovely photos on this site.

Remember Ruth Stout and her no-till, all mulch method? The HAVE-MORE PLAN following WWII? Helen and Scott Nearing? And I remember a short-lived publication that I think Mother Earth News put out called Lifestyles???? I can't remember for sure, but each issue focused on people's rural lives, gardens, animals, etc. I remember one issue was about a family who bought an entire abandoned French village, raised sheep, spun and wove the wool, and then there was COUNTRYSIDE magazine published in Wisconsin.

In some ways, I think print media helped me feel more a part of a community of gardeners than electronic. I'm not complaining, just observing . . .

The actual title of the Rodale book is GROWING FRUITS AND VEGETABLES BY THE ORGANIC METHOD.

Ruth Stout I don't recall, but Helen and Scott Nearing I do, as well as Euell Gibbons - I adored him, he was so down to earth.
I love magazines! There was on, Harrowsmith, but I don't believe it is out of the US anymore - Countryside is nice (however, they do not pay their writers, not good for me) but they do have a lot of information - County Living Gardener is one of my favorites as is the Brit edition of Country Living magazine (the British edition is more nature-oriented I feel). Country Woman and the sort of real glossy ones just don't interest me much - alot of photos but not a lot of print.

Katherine -- This may be a good source -- http://americanhistory.si.edu/house/yourvisit/victorygarden.asp The Museum of American History had a victory garden by the museum a couple of years ago. I don't remember the exhibit being great (I remember being disappointed.), but they've just reopened and I bet you could find a helpful librarian there. Darla

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
