Kitchen Gardeners

What am I to do my poor little garden has become a haven for every squirrel in the metro Atlanta Area. They are quite selective because the lone suvivor is the cucumber plant that is blossoming nicely but everything else shows signs of the assault. Anyone with some suggestions to ward off the foe I will greatly appreciate it lest I waste much time and energy and cash this year.

Carol, don't confuse ''wildlife management'' or ''protection of property'' with cruelty. I stand by my comment.and I talk to rocks too.

I am having the same battle. I have bird feeders that they like to sit under and eat what the birds drop. I have also fed them peanuts. They started taking bites out of my ripening tomatoes so I covered them. I used lots of cayene pepper too. They found my silver queen corn and ate every ear even though I put cayene all around them.

I never thought I could kill anything but I was just on Amazon looking at air rifles. I would love to have a squirrel on a stake right now.

.....forget the cross-deal. all that stuff is ##@%$!! get a cat.

I have posted this on other threads, but a good homemade squirrel recipe for plants is one with Cayenne pepper. I have homemade squirrel repellent ones at my site
www.squirrelrepellent.net.

If you don't want to make one, there are plenty of commercially made sprays for the garden available, they are also at my site. However, I agree the longest term solution may be to get a dog or a cat, since my two cats died last year I notice an increase in squirrels in the yard, it may be time to go back to the shelter and get a new one. Not to mention that some people (not me) put used cat littler by their plants and claim that keeps squirrels away....not sure I would like that one..

Best of luck

Hi Corinthia,
I've read that placing plastic snakes in the garden helps to deter critters, and someone else cut up an old green garden hose and placed those pieces in the garden to mimic snakes. Good luck.

...the ''fake'' predators work for awhile,..then they figure it out.get a kitten/cat. can you have pets?

This has nothing to do with squirrels but it may be a deterrent for some garden invaders.
I was talking to a very experienced gardener and she grows borders of nettles around her veggie patch to keep kangaroos away.
She said they hate nettles.
Now I guess you all don't have kangaroos but some of us here in Australia do.

I have often wondered what I would do if Roos invaded my patio tomato plants :-)

Seriously though...I hate nettles too.

A cat - or even better - two cats from the same brood works best. No fluffies...regular cats. Don't let them in the house often. Make then a cold weather bed outside (which they will never sleep in) and feed then a 1/2 can each of tuna every morning. Keep the bowls away from each other or they will fight. Put them down simultaneously and don't be afraid to kick one if needed.

1/2 can of tuna works wonders and you can get it cheap at Sams Club/Walmart or even the Krogers when it's on sale. Put out a regular cat food mix at about sundown and then take it away before dark. Cats have very fast metabolism so after they eat the tuna or the catfood they will snooze for an hour or so - then they go hunting. The regular catfood at the end of the day will tell you how effective they have been at foriaging. They will eat what they need - sleep an hour or so - and protect your place from regular varmints all night.

Don't fall in love with these outdoor cats - they will accept petting a bit - but they primarily want the tuna breakfast:-)

Yesterday I installed a lightweight "deer" netting, inexpensive from Lowe's in 7' x 150' rolls, to try to harvest ripe tomatoes without holes made by birds and squirrels. So far I've enjoyed watching a frustrated pair of cardinals trying to get to the plants. I love the birds and keep them well fed, but I want true vine ripe tomatoes for my family's enjoyment and health. I'll let you know if this works for me in about a month.
Stay natural.

Being a STL Cardinals fan (baseball-wise) I always thought they were nice/decent birds. Wrong....Cardinals are VERY aggressive birds....they intimidate all smaller birds and can beat all but a Hawk and I have even seen them chase hawks.

thanks that sounds like something I can use with out the responsibility of feeding it :)

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
