Kitchen Gardeners

I wonder if any of you find it frustrating that garden tours usually focus on ornamentals. Our local food security group decided to hold our own Food Garden Tour next Sunday. We have managed to get quite a few local gardeners on board, and can only hope that the public and the weather cooperate. I'm going to be acting as host at the Community Garden, where I have a large plot. So I guess I had better get weeding. Anybody else ever hold a Food Garden Tour?

There was a much advertised garden tour near me recently and I did not attend because, like you, I was frustrated with the focu on ornamentals only. I've never heard of a food garden tour but I think that is a great idea.

Man, I've been going crazy, getting the Community Garden ready for the Edible Garden Tour. I'll let you know how it goes on Sunday. Do you have anything like the 100 mile diet challenge in your area? We do a 50 mile challenge here because there's nothing but trees or ocean past that.

I've been doing a KGI Kitchen garden day tour for the last two years. Thanks for reminding me to get the word out for this year.
Note to Roger, Are you still promoting this?

Yes! We had a Miami Food Garden Tour on July 19th, and was a huge success! We carpooled form garden to garden, having made arrangements beforehand with a host at each garden. We took a huge 10 gallon drink cooler filled with allspice tea (from my garden's allspice tree). We had a meal at the end. You can see our website for details: www.urbanoasisproject.org

Good luck!

One thing- it would be good to drive the tour route yourself first so no one gets lost, and make sure there is enough parking.

İ was previously a member of a couple of community gardens and we did a couple of garden tours. Our focus was not on the ornamentals but we went to visit permaculture and other community gardens in our area. İt was a great sucess.

Our Tours usually include both food and flowers - most are now growing both and it is fun to see how vegetable and fruit gardening can be incorporated into an overall landscape.

The Edible Garden Tour went really well. It rained in the early morning, but then cleared up for most of the day. Most of the gardens had about 100 visitors. (I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but this is a small town.) We are already making plans for next year's tour. One idea was that we try to provide a bus to take people to the out-of-town gardens, but I don't know how feasible that would be. Some of the garden hosts were collecting donations, which were given to the Fruit Tree Project. This local group arranges to pick fruit for people who can't or don't want to. The fruit is divided between the tree owners (if they want it), the pickers, and local charities. The main purpose of the Project is to prevent a huge problem with bears coming into town after the fruit if it's not picked. I helped a group pick some gorgeous yellow plums on Tuesday.
Happy harvesting, everybody!

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
