Forget "What I Did For Love," It's What I'm Doing For Gardening That Might Kill Me!

This post, and the title of this post, come from a brief exchange between Diana and myself earlier today. We were comparing notes on how some of our efforts in the garden have been less than safe, and Diana encouraged me to create a discussion, believing it would be worthwhile. Credit Diana for the great title of this post!

Cuts, scrapes, bruises, bug bites, ant attacks, embarrassing falls, unfriendly encounters with nature... we're all experiencing them. We're all surviving them (so far). Tell your tale here. We'll laugh. We'll cry. We'll cheer you on!

well, I think we can all relate to some degree Heron. That push to not quite yet leave it alone. Haven't had a bee after me, but the ants won't leave me alone! Best gardening wishes this year!

I haven't had any accidents as dramatic as some of the ones recounted here (knock on wood!), but last spring during my first week of maternity leave when i was at home waiting for the baby to be born, i spent some time sitting on the rocks in the flower bed pulling weeds. I must have bumped my leg against one of the rocks because a huge, ugly bruise appeared on my calf afterwards. The whole time during labor, every single person that came in had to ask, oh my goodness what happened to your leg?!? It is surprising how many people come and go during that process! Eventually one of the nurses started to answer for me - i think she got sick of hearing the question too, lol!

Last summer my joint gardening/exercise resolution was that I would get up early and ride my bike to my community garden plot before work. I'd roll out of bed, forgo the usual tea and newspaper wake-up interlude, and hop on the bike and ride my way to greater energy and alertness. (You can guess what's coming!) Our community garden is set somewhat below the street with wood steps and a down sloping path. I went down the path, used only my front brake to slow down, locked up the brakes and promptly did a somersault over the handle bar. It was painful limping around work the next few days and explaining myself!

These stories are painfully hilarious! Thanks for sharing. It does make me a little fearful of my garden, though......I'm a major klutz, but somehow I've avoided any major injuries (so far).

I'm constantly trimming the tips off of my fingers with pruners, scissors, etc. One day my husband asked how I had cut my hand, my answer: "with the hand trimmer, loppers are for limbs!"

Besides losing one garden glove at the begining of every season, usually the right one, just this morning I put my new garden hose to work and was so preoccupied giving the seeds and seedlings a deep long drink I did not notice that nozzle was loose and my shorts were getting soaked that is not until I was heading downtown and felt somewhat uncomfortable. fortunately I was near home and could change.

Well, I was in the garden this morning, just walking around, pulling a few weeds, checking out the spot for my fall vegetables... and something kept stinging me on my back (a noticable sting, not a painful one). I pinched it in the cloth and ran to find my husband to get it out. Turns out it was a grasshopper. I don't know how he got under my top. Not 10 minutes later, it happened again! Another grasshopper. Aside from that, this summer has been pretty accident-free (not counting the numerous, continuous ant bites). No falls. No cuts. No bruises. Just dogs getting under the fence and stealing veggies!

Forum Policy

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I would be happy to hear any comments you may have.  This is very much a work in progress so plese feel free to ask me to add anything you think is needed.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
