Maria, dont get discouraged. With a .85 ac ''battlefield'', you CAN defeat this ''foe''. Just dont give up.

Thanks Carol,
I have been pulling it. But the next DAY it's all there again. And it seems like it's spreading all over the place. Can I compost the leaves? Sometimes I am lucky that in some places when I pull it, I get a long peace of root, then I pull as much as I can. They seem to go for miles and apread horizontally as well as vertically.
I also found some poyson ivy. I wish my broccoli was that persistant. so far I was not able to harvest one broccoli in 2 seasons, but I sure take lots of weeds...

I personally throw all invasive plants into the trash. For a plant to be invasive in this area it has to be especially tough - I carefully pulled every bit I found for about three years. This probably isn't bindweed because you haven't mentioned the pretty flowers - its probably the cousin which ISN T called pennyroyal. I'll have to get my 'weeds of the west' book out again and look it up.

I recommend that book, by the way - its a great book.

Pennyroyal bears absolutely no resemblance to bindweed.

Maria, I have this in my corral in one part of it, and the lunatic alpaca that is where the bindweed is (I have to keep him separate) won't eat it. I'm pretty sure that yours looks like the same leaves I have on my plant. It's definitely a western plant. If you get white flowers, and I'm pretty sure you will,It will be bindweed, and then you will have to prepare yourself for a real battle. This stuff just sends out new roots if you break up the root and the tiniest bit will grow a new plant. And Carol is absolutely right, it's completely resistant to Round Up (which we shouldn't buy on general principles!). The only way to get rid of it is by being determined and relentless.

Sorry for such unhappy news! We'll hold your hand though. :)

The only solution to bindweed is "weeditation"
that is to decide to meditate and weed.
I make daily rounds and have a weed of the day.
Monday Garlic mustard
Tuesday Bindweed
Wodendays Morning glories
Thorsday Lamb's quarters
Friday Honeysuckle
Saturday Euonymous (since I'm not at work)
Sunday Euonymous (since I'm not at work.....
