I heard strawberries, blueberries, and other acid loving fruits benefit from coffee grounds. Is anyone doing this? Do you just dump them around the stems or dig them in a little? What results do you get?

We use or coffee grounds, herb tea leaves, egg shells and banama peels directly around our fruit trees, bushes and roses. And of course some goes in the compost pile. Coffee grounds are high in nitrogen, egg shells are high in calcium and banana peels are high in potassium and has numerous other minerals in them, like iron and selenium, both micronutrients for plants and humans.

Used coffee grounds are a good source of acidic nitrogen. They are very good for strawberries, raspberries, potatoes and rhodedendrons, all of which i think prefer an acidic soil.Ten years ago i used to get bags of the stuff from Starbucks each week. Our rhodedebdrons still flower really well and i,m sure it was the copious amounts of coffee that did it. When adding them in the compost heap you need to neutralise them with a little lime, eggshells or other crushed shells.

ah... then this will probably help my watermelons which are looking very pale for my tastes. Thanks for the tip!

But I knew coffee grouns were a good source of nitro, why didn't I think of that??? doh!

I use coffee grounds quite a bit - either straight at the "feet" of my roses or mixed into my compost pile. Haven't used it on berries before - I usually mulch them with pine needles or trimmings from my out-of-control rosemary bushes.

Sadly I can't drink coffee anymore, so I love that Starbucks has the freebie "grounds for your garden" and I grab a bag for the roses or the compost whenever I can. The roses really seem to "perk" up after an application of grounds! Lol ;)

I gave up coffee, too, alas! But my community hasn't so we have an abundance of grounds available from local (college town) coffee shops.
Thanks for the reply.

Hi Jane,

I use coffee grounds as a snail or slug deterant. I find it works really well.

Ian, on what do you use it? This could be very important in my garden where we lost a whole crop of chard last year to the slugs.
Thanks,
Jane

slugs also love beer... and love to drown in it. if you have slug issues try a shallow pan of beer each night. i don't drink myself, so a tall can of beer last 4 applications for me. it's pretty cheap and doesn't kill plants.

Now that's very helpful! Maybe I'll get to eat some of my chard this year! Thanks, Ian.

This sounds great. How often do you add eggshells or coffee grounds to the soil?

...I'll try the coffee grounds, but I draw the line when it comes to the beer deal.Good tips.THANKS.

My mother always put coffee grounds (wet) on the rose-bushes and on a rubber-tree plant we had. It was my job to care for all 20+ rose-bushes and, to my teenage dismay, they grew very well!

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.
