YES!

You can gently stand them back up right and mound soil around them to keep them upright again or do nothing and they will straighten up themselves. ( I normally straighten mine as it kind of bugs me to see them laying down)

Some years ago I read a corn planting method where you start your corn in trenches and fill the trenches in as the plants grow. The purpose was to give the corn a deeper root to help it stand up to the wind a little better.

sometimes yes. sometimes no. you can usually ''fix'' 'em. hail is another story. good-luck.

....get the stalk straight.add more soil at base.pack it down a little. then move on. simple.

I don't grow corn but I've had interesting experiences with it being blown over in my teen years. One of my summer jobs growing up was to de-tassel seed corn, and blown over fields of corn were the hardest to walk up and down the rows in, and very easy to get lost in!

...and dont forget the neat little cuts on your arms or legs,Cielce. I remember.

Ok, so great inof here. Now, another question. Is it normal to have ants on the corn stalks?

Reply to This

Mine went down about 3 times this year until i supported the entire bit. Second crop is going ot be planted a bit farther apart to see if that helps with strengthening the root systems to prevent this problem..

.....ants? look around the groups/forums Marian, there must be 101 tips about the ""DREADED ANTS''. I say let em be.

Marian,

Ants by themselves are not a problem on corn unless the ants are tending aphids. Aphids, besides causing damage by sucking plant juices, can spread various virus and such. I would be looking for what the ants are doing (they are either hunting for or getting something to eat), eliminate the food and the ants will be busy somewhere else.

The ants are crawling into the crevices of leaves, so tight that I would have to pull the leaves off almost to see them, but I will examine and let you know. The corn is beautiful, full of tassels and now silks. I am hand polinationg to be sure they are pollintaed, touching tassels to tassels and tassels to sliks. I see lots of dusty pollen floating around when I do this. Wish me luck! and thanks.

Some of my corn has blown over, but some of it has had some unintended support. I made a last minute decision to split a few rows of corn & pole beans after I had built a trellis out of poles at the end of the rows with the rope "netted together" to give the beans something to climb. The corn that is along the ropes hasn't blown down...yet.

Hello Sumitra, Thankyou for sharing your pictures. Your students are beautiful. I thought of you the other day as I watched a documentary about Nepal on the television.

Hi Sumitra, It is great to see your photos and bee hives. Like you I long for equality for all people on this planet. If all people could grow their own vegetables it would be a great thing. It is very hard to know that lots of people do not have ...

My father-in-law Fred Pond died ten years ago. He loved his garden and I still miss him a lot especially at this time of year when the seed catalogues start arriving. The Pond family lived on a seven acre homestead of sorts in Westford Massachuset...

I think this might need it's own category, don't you? Tomatoes are one of the most popular things to grow and we've been placing them in all kinds of groups, but the fact is we almost all grow them, and they have specific needs.

The cooking shows are entertaining, but that's all. Some of my favorite recipes started with notes handed down from family. They're still as good as ever. James Beard, Joy of cooking, and Professional Chefs Manural are good references. I have over...

Red osier dogwood is just the best plant for this time of year – cut down some branches – you can find them in fields and ditches and then place them in garden pots or containers. Fill the over-season containers with soil to hold the stems. Attach...

Hi, I'm starting to put together a few guidlines on using the discussion forum on here.

I don't want to make our community hide bound by rules and regulations but I think that, as the community has grown, some explanation of what is expected is needed.
