Kitchen Gardeners

Trying to convince the old lady to let me get some chickens and was wondering if any of you all had any. I have had them before but am trying to get my wife on board. I miss being able to go get fresh eggs whenever I want, plus the added benifit of chicken scat in my compost. Just wondering what all you chicken owners thhought.

I spent all afternoon trying to think of something eggs-ellent for the a group name but came up with diddly.

If you google there a million chicken sayings out there. You could use a name like "Nobody here but us chickens," but i like your suggestions too.

I think it's just a matter of hitting the + group button on the groups page. The only extra is coming up with some inspirational words of wisdom as a mission statement for the group to get people to join.

If you're feeling inspired ... go for it.

There's something I said years ago when in the middle of butchering a batch one fall. My family teases me about it: "One thing about chickens, you can always eat them."

Meaning if you have some and times get bad, they fit nicely in the stew pot -- never go to waste. I don't know why my kids thought it was funny -- must have been the context of the day :-)

I have spent the entire day trying to come up with a name for the group. Give me another 24 hrs. It will come to me eventually. I'll post it as soon as I think of it to see what yall think...................Chris

We love our chickens! We have 6 hens right now: a Buff Orpington, a Dark Brahma, two Partridge Cochins, and two Americaunas. Not all of our hens are laying just yet, though we did get a new green egg yesterday, meaning both our Americaunas are now laying. They're all quite friendly, even coming up to our 5 year old and letting him pet them. -- I'll have to see if we can get them tamed to a leash. One question though: what type of leash do you walk a chicken on?
Normally we move our chickens, in their tractor (a portable coop with nest box), around our yard so that they can eat up weeds and bugs. Since it is winter and freezing temps, we've put their coop in a garden spot over our hop plants. They have access to their "indoor" coop, where they all sleep at night.
The only thing I wish is that we could do is get organic feed. No such luck where we live. It isn't medicated, but it isn't organic either. At least they get "pastured" in the warmer months. :)

We use a "leg" collar and bungee like jump rope for a leash. The bungee was to help lessen the shock when Al's chicken takes an unexpected flight... She also uses a crook to help prod him in the right direction. After we get back from vacation I will try to post some photos of the "collar", leash, and crook.... but for now may be you can get an idea of how it works from my wife's blog post....

Yes, in fact we just started this fall. We attended a class put on at Love Apple Farms on raising chickens and came home with 4 chicks, then got two more. We have six chickens now, who are probably going to start laying in April. It's a pity they only lay for about three years, I don't know what we are going to do with them when they stop laying, they can live for 25 years. Tom says we'll just let them go, I'm not sure I can do that. Maybe they will make good chicken stock?

Anywho, it's an adventure. I am uploading a video of my chickens, so you will be able to see them soon.
