Is there a climate map of the USA that could be added to the forum somewhere?
Us Aussies tend to know state names but not the abbreviations, I remember Kate mentioning this before.

I looked for a map, but could not find one with the state names. This is the best I could find.
http://www.usna.usda.gov/Hardzone/ushzmap.html.
Maybe it would be helpful, if we include our garden zone when we post. Do other countries have something like garden zones, or plant hardiness zones?

Thanks that's great, easy to see the climate in the area and the abbreviations are there as well.
I shall see what I can find for Australia.
Its a lovely spring day here, so I am doing some weeding and enjoying the birds chirping and the kookaburras are having a great chuckle.There are lots of bees on the winter greens I let flower and go to seed. And all our summer vegetable seeds are germinating well.
A gardeners paradise.

Seed catalogs always carry zone maps. For my region they've been fairly consistent.

Hi both... If there is any interest I could pull together the climate maps into the same place as a note. You get to notes through the navbar at the top of the page.....

I think it would be good to have the climate maps as a note as a quick reference to discussions. I think we would be more likely to check out where people are gardening if it is on the page.
Okay, we could navigate away from the page to check climate and locations but that takes time and most of us blog in our coffee breaks!

Brook Elliott once said to me that the USDA hardiness zones were next to useless, because most of what we would grow are annuals (biennials).
Maybe Frost free dates, real ones, not USDA ones, would be more useful.

I saw on a PBS special that frost free dates may no longer apply with climate change being as it is. Some people in Minnesota were interviewed and said their growing season is quite a bit longer and they're able to grow vegetables and flowers that were unthinkable just a few years ago.

HOW TO - ADD A LINK
Several people have experienced difficulty putting working links into comments and blogs etc and I know it is clumsy.... so here is how you do it.....
First type the text you want to appear.... ie IAN'S PAGE
Then go back and highlight the link text.
Then hit the hyperlink button...a pictogram of a chain link.
Your browser may intervene and request permission to allow temporary scripting or some similar message. Allow it and go back and highlight the text again
